Lives up to major rain!
Took this on my first leg of my 1 month car trip with 3 kids and two dogs. It fits so much I am completely amazed. It fits 2 large suit cases a carry on, sleep mat and a back pack. That is with out expanding it! The straps that it is sent with hold it securely and I haven't had to worry about it shifting at all. As for it being waterproof. The last 4 hours of my trip was what could have only been described as a monsoon. At times it was coming down so hard that there was 1.5 inches of standing water on the road. The cooler that I had on the back tailgate which had stayed dry in previous trips had over 4 inches of water in the bottom. But the bag on top was essentially dry. Just a little bit of dampness had gone through at the zipper in the back but not enough to soak anything just enough for the outside of my fabric suitcase to feel damp. I think that is a complete win! I would completely recommend this product it works very well for the money, and packs away small when not in use.

Nice bag, but watch out for rain.
This is easy to install and has plenty of room for all our camping supplies. I liked the expandable feature and is stayed on the roof tightly. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because it rained on us and this absolutely filled with water. It didn't drain back out, so I think the fabric is water tight, but that didn't help keep it dry in the first place.

Huge and sturdy
This is awesome. We drove 3000 with this strapped to my roof. We hit heavy rains and drove through high winds. No problems. Some things I think may have been problems for negative reviewers.1. It needs to be filled completely so it won't flap. It fits a lot! We had 2 tents, 4 sleeping bags, 4 pillows, 4 camp chairs, 2 life jackets, 1 large tarp, a couple blow up pool toys, and a duffel full of towels and swimsuits.2. There is a large flap over the zipper. The flap needs to be facing downward to cover the zipper area to keep that area from absorbing rain.3. The straps included are okay... but we used our own ratchet straps, which worked better.

Good carrier for the money! It’s my second one!
We travel round-trip around 2000 miles a couple times a year, I bought one of these car top carriers a couple years ago and it has been fine. I will say, after many trips it did start getting holes in it, which got my items inside wet! Are used gorilla tape over the holes and that solved the problem for another trip or two, I ended up throwing it away when we moved and decided I’d buy a new one for our next trip! The bag is huge, I can fit a ton in it! We bought the car mat and didn’t have any trouble with it sliding around. We only have side rails and it worked fine! We did use duct tape after we secured it to our car so the flap The bag is huge, and can fit a ton in it! Not sure what the proper way to do it is, but we load the bag on the ground and then my husband and teenage son put it up on top our van. I really like that the bag is adjustable, so we can zip the unused portion down. We bought the car mat and didn’t have any trouble with it sliding around. We only have side rails and it worked fine! The straps are easy to tighten and seem well-made. We did use duct tape after we secured it to our car so the extra strap didn’t flap as much! All and all our big problem was it developing hole, but that was after a few years of use! So it’s not perfect, But, I thought it was good enough to buy a second one!

Good quality... great price
I have no complaints! We drove 11 hours and had no issues at all. It did not rain but the material feels thick and good quality. I recommend this for sure. And it's such a great price. I did not need to use the expanding zipper. We put all of our kids Christmas gifs, our pack and play and our clothes (in big space saver bags) in it.

Excellent extended cargo room for vans/SUVs with pre-installed roof racks.
Well constructed, but requires patience in mounting and securing to a car/van. I think that you're better off if you have a roof rack already installed on your vehicle to use this since you need something to tie the tie-downs to. I was able to get a standard sized wooden chair completely covered, tied down and moved around 800 miles, through rain and mountain ranges, in a matter of two days using this product and it protected and kept the chair dry through rains and some strong winds. If you tie this thing down, TIGHT, to your roof rack, unless you encounter a tornado, hurricane or some other such wind disaster, this thing is not going anywhere. Because it's constructed of something that is more like a rubberized fabric, it may make some noise when you get up to high speeds on the highway but this doesn't appear to be constant and is subject to change depending on speed and wind direction - at most, this is a minor annoyance, but is a small price to pay for the expandability and light-weightedness of this product

We did have a lot of wind over the four day trip across country so even though there were things that weren't great it did the job
The item is as described however - even with a mat (which I purchased separately) it slides to the rear of the car. If you don't have front and back racks you will have the same problem. Thank goodness I had the hard coated antenna on top or it would have flown off. I even had it secured with two extra straps. Also - the extra material on the ends of the straps do flap and are very loud. We stopped and attached them with tape and heavy nylon cable ties but they came undone. We did have a lot of wind over the four day trip across country so even though there were things that weren't great it did the job. It kept most everything dry except for things on the very bottom which somehow got wet in the rain.

A couple of very annoying items with this carrier
A couple of very annoying items with this carrier. 1) I found it difficult to load. The sides are obviously not rigid and getting items properly loaded took a lot of effort. 2) It is not waterproof!!! On our trip to Cape Cod it rained the night before we left and the carrier was already loaded and closed and some items were "wet" inside. On the way home same thing but worse since it rained even harder the night before and this time a suitcase was soaked through. Made every effort to get it closed properly etc. I would not purchase this item again. The only redeeming feature is that it takes up very little storage space!
