can these be driven in with a metal hammer/ax?

I've hit them with a sledge hammer as well as a heavy metal hammer...

Will this work to split wood?

It would probably only work with SOFT WOODS for a while and or only as emergency; probably not even Douglas fur, more like pine WITHOUT knots, twisted grains and sapped woods; The plastic is hard, but i dont believe it was designed for splitting wood. They do work great as shims.
