Unfortunately, due to the under-vehicle location of the pump assembly the plug usually becomes corroded in place, particularly in northern climates. When removal is attempted the allen head often strips out and the plug becomes very challenging to extract. TECH TIP: When rounding of the allen head occurs, use a small sharp punch and a sharp whack with a small hammer to start the plug rotating in the correct direction. FORD'S SOLUTION: Recognizing the problem Ford developed a replacement plug that eliminates the flush design. The new plug sticks out of the HFCM and has a textured grip area - supposedly so the plug can be removed with one's fingers. We find this solution to be less than adequate. The plug still becomes corroded in and quite often a vise grips is needed to break it free - this typically leaves the soft metal of the "improved" plug a gnarly twisted up mess. OUR SOLUTION: Tired of half solutions? We found a better way! Our plug is zinc coated with a brass petcock to minimize corrosion issues and requires no tools. No more rounding off ! (includes a new o-ring) We all know human nature - if something is easy to do, we are more likely to do it. All 6.0L owners should be draining their HFCM's more often to protect their injection systems. We were on a trip and the engine started running like it had water. We pulled over at an Auto Zone parking lot. We bought a filter kit and pulled the existing drain plug at the lot, drained out so much water!!! Changed the filters. But when we looked at the drain plug...OMG, it was disintegrated and no way was it going to thread back on. NO PARTS STORE had this item. None of them. All 3 Ford dealerships in this city had Parts Departments closed on Saturday.We went through the store looking for a bolt, or anything that might work. Nothing worked. All the threads were wrong.Finally, we saw a drain pan plug with a rubber outer body. We force screwed that thing in and as it cut threads into the rubber, it sealed the hole. We were able to complete our trip.THANKS GUYS for this solution to a Super-Crappy OEM designed part.
