Once side is very soft and the other is a bit more stiff, but not scratchy at all. I tried using the “non-shedding” cotton pads, but it got lint all in my eyes when I removed my eye makeup. I wear contacts and this was a major concern. This product comes with 2 small bags - one for storage and one for the pads waiting to be washed. I washed the first one last night in the washer and let it air dry. It looked brand new afterwards. (I did wash it with some hand soap after I finished removing my make up so the stains wouldn’t dry on it). These are so much better than any of the cotton pads and will last much longer.
