Q: What are the dimensions? What size ring would I need with it?

The steamer is 10" diameter... We use it in a 14" wok with about three inches of water over a gas burner... The wok has a flat bottom so a gas burner ring is not required... If you are talking about a ring to go on a sauce pan or soup pot with water, the ring needs to be wider than your pan or pot on the outside and narrower than the steamer on the inside... Q: My bamboo steamer came with mesh bags. What do I use the mesh bags for? I was taught to place fish/food on a plate , directly in.

You can use a plate when steaming product, but the plate actually blocks the much-needed steam from reaching the food which may result in an uncertain (and longer) cooking time. We prefer to use the mesh liners for a more balanced cook.

Q: My lid arrived detached from its rim. Is this normal for this item?

No, I would have to say that it is damaged. The lid needs to fit securely onto the food basket and that can only happen if the rim is securely attached to the top part of the lid.
