GREAT GRASS!!
GREAT GRASS. IT TAKES A FULL WEEK TO SPROUT, BUT THAT IS HOW A GOOD FESCUE WORKS.

Sprouts quickly, nice dark green grass.
Grows a little too quickly for my taste, but that's better than the opposite.

Prep, patience & practice
I like this seed, I don’t love it. I purchased a 3lb and 7lb bag for my 1000 sq ft area to seed. I live in a transition zone 5b. High desert (very dry, low humidity with little to no rain) and 7000 ft in elevation. (Northern NM) I spent a week prepping the area by hand tilling the soil and burnt the weeds prior with a weed torch. The window for seeding here is very small. I finished the prep on a Saturday with temps in the high 80’s and watered, seeded, start fertilized and covered with a frost cloth to keep the seedlings moist on Sunday when the weather dropped to the 70’s with lows in the 40’s. The last picture is today, day 27 since seeding Sept 9th. I watered 3 times a day and left the frost cloth covering on for about the first 2 weeks until I saw decent germination. Due to the environment here, straw covering doesn’t work because we get too much wind. A local greenhouse owner gave me the cloth tip a few years ago and it’s been a really successful way to seed here. It allows water, sunlight and air to penetrate through the frost cloth. I purchased 2 here on Amazon (10x50 feet I think they were). I would say germination was about 75%. I will fertilize and overseed again in the spring and fall next year. After that, I have a lot of clover to battle with. I’m satisfied with the results compared to the before but will probably move to a Scott’s rapid tall fescue next time I seed. I used a Scott’s “seeding” fertilizer with a pre-emergent for weeds that “supposedly” wont negatively effect the germination. I did still have tons of new clover come up but it didn’t appear to effect the germination rate of the tall fescue. Now, at day 27 I just have to water once a day-cut back last week. I still have to keep an eye on the weather as we do get freezes this time of year. I simply cover with the cloth until after day 45 (since seeding) at night if the temps get down to freezing. The cloth protects the new grass down to 21 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live in an easier climate with a better window, you will probably get better results than I did. It’s a difficult place to seed grass here but a learning process, none the less. I’m up for the challenge.

Does not grow
Don't buy. Doesn't grow. Bought it just to see if will grow. Used starter fert, watered all that good stuff. This stuff is just like any other big box store seed. Easiest way to check for good seed is read the analysis of seed on back label. You want to see 0% weed and watch out for fillers and other categories they have with the seed. Good seed to use is GCI turf seed from North Carolina. In north east use tall fescue it withstands all our weather conditions and resist our change of seasons the best when treated. Always use starter fert with seed.

Great results, thick and durable lawn
I purchased this 20 lb bag of Pennington The Rebels Tall Fescue to help fill out some thin spots and overseed my lawn, and I am incredibly impressed with the results. The seeds germinated quickly—within about 10 to 14 days, I started seeing vibrant green sprouts poking through. Now that it's established, the grass looks wonderfully thick, deep green, and has a great texture. What I appreciate most is its resilience. It handles foot traffic from the family and pets really well, and it has stood up beautifully to hot, dry spells without patching out. If you're looking for a tough, low-maintenance grass that actually delivers on its promises, I highly recommend giving this a try.

Meh- not worth buying
Been disappointed with this grass seed- it seems like only 10% or maybe 20% grows. I’ve buried it in varying depths trying to get it to grow, from 1”-4”, also tried adding grass clippings to fine mulch on top to keep it moist. Watered every day for weeks. Only a very fine patch has popped up in a couple places where I had planted an excessive dump of seed. Then, even those fine patches some of the baby grass quickly died. I even added new grass fertilizer, and another attempt “organic fertilizer” which was like this rich dark brown potting soil-like stuff. Nothing worked! It’s not really the cost that bothers me about the product, it’s all the effort that has gone into growing grass with no results. I live in Chicago suburbs where it is not very hot, and the grass has been planted in partial shade. I see no reason why grass seed shouldn’t grow- maybe that’s why it’s so cheap on Amazon. Another annoying thing about this seed, is that Pennington coats it with A LOT of this powdered green dye. It’s strong. Anything that touches it or brushes by it is turned green. Reminds me of how golf courses dye the short grass on the greens areas with a strong green/blue dye. I’m not sure the reason they add the dye on the seed, but perhaps it’s adding to the growth inhibition. Idk. But I def won’t be buying this stuff again even if other seed costs twice as much! NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

Great product, robust grass
This seed is exceptional. Heavy rains washed out part of a hill I live at the top of. I dumped 30 sq ft of topsoil down and then seeded it with this seed. Grass grew quickly and fairly evenly. It is too soon to know if it'll take stronger root, but so long as nothing washes it away before then, it should. I did use it to also patch a few thin areas that previously were covered in pine needles. It even grew in that soil.

Tall fescue grass seed
My entire backyard got regraded while putting in a new shed. My clay and gravel backyard was bulldozed over the existing lawn. This was during the rainy season and when the rain stopped it got very hot in this hardened into basically a rock. Instructions said to till at 4 in deep. My teller could only get into it about a half inch. Skeptical that I would ever have a lawn back here again, I put down twice as much grass seed. As you can see I put a lot of straw on top of the seed. I watered two times a day. The first picture is the seven bales of straw that I put over the grass seed. The second picture is 14 days after seeding. I'm pretty impressed!
