A great companion to Insight Guide's "Shanghai Step by Step". While IG's book is a 15 top walking tours you can do by yourself, Pocket Shanghai opens the city up even more. Like a Zagat guide for a city. It gives great info for each of the major areas or neighborhoods in Shanghai. AND IT INCLUDES CHINESE CHARACTERS to places and venues. This comes in handy when asking for help from locals or even cab drivers who may not speak English. And it is small enough that you won't stick out like a hapless tourist from a distance. It includes hours of operation info, metro stop names if applicable, pricing information, and even "Best" lists for each area. Very efficient.
