Works great - Glad I did not buy a more expensive one. I needed this to check the RPM of a piece of equipment after gear ratio changes. I verified the tachometer is accurate by first checking it against a known motor RPM; it was exactly what I would expect. I used it a handful of times to get the readings I need, and it seems to work great. Very easy to use. I'm glad I did not pay more for the same exact thing with a different brand slapped on it.

I have been having a very good experience with this tachometer. It seems very accurate, of course with any HAND held tachometer you have to make sure you keep your hand VERY steady, especially at higher speeds.. if your hand moves even a tiny bit it will throw the readings way off. I use this to get a precise RPM reading on my milling machine so I can synchronize a tapping head to the spindle. Since the machine uses a variable speed belt, it is impossible to get the machine to produce a precision spindle RPM, but thanks to this tachometer, I don't need precision RPM, I just need to know what it is, then feed that number into my CNC controller to do the math and come up with a feed rate that matches whatever the spindle RPM is. I find that if I rest my hand on my vice when I take the reading, it's very accurate.. If I try to just stand there and hold it at the spindle, well it's all over the place... it's not the fault of the device, it's a simple fact that if my hand moves slightly between rotations, the time it took to get the reflection will be different. I suspect that those experiencing accuracy issues do not realize how critical it is to hold steady, in my opinion at higher RPMs, it would be impossible to hold ANY device steady enough to get a consistent reading.. but if you stabilize yourself on something that is attached to whatever you are measuring, then you can get accurate readings. I have been tapping holes using this tachometer as my spindle speed reference for about a year now with this device and synchronization is perfect.

If you're looking for a good averaged non-contact tach this will work. if you're looking for a finely tuned, highly accurate tach keep looking. Used if one half a dozen projects already and find it helpful but has issues being consistent in readings. From reading to reading it will vary by 30-50%. Some may due to operator error (me) but not all. Still, for the price, it does what I need it to do. Updating as on 17 May 2014: The unit still works for the most part. Still getting spotty results in back to back tests. Find it is VERY sensitive to direct light whihc is an issue for me since 90% of my testing is outside. I have to create my own shade to get good readings but creating my own shade isn't an issue according to my wife (yeah, she thinks she's funnny) Also, I'd take a star off as it appears to eat batteries and at 4 AA per it's going to cost me more in batteries than the unit itself. I store it in the soft case standing upright so there is no pressure on the TEST button. Having to take the batts out everytime will be a slight inconvenience. That and the clips in the batt compartment keep poppoing out. Might be related?

I purchased this to take some measurements of various power tool and found its simplicity and repeatability refreshing for such an inexpensive tool. It includes plenty of reflective strips for lots of applications and the case is adequate to keep it all in. The Tach. stabilizes in a second or two and isn't overly sensitive to slight angle changes, especially for a hand held. As for accuracy I can only attest to calculated RPM to being within a few percent of the readings and with so many variables...it does what I want it to. Overall for the price and Amazon delivery this a great tool around the house and shop.

Super cheap, but great value! I needed a photo tach to determine gear ratios in an old sealed transmission, this thing worked perfect. It has a simple red laser that reflects nicely off the included tape. Included a case and probably 3-4' of reflective tape that had a nice adhesive on it. I'm not sure of the accuracy tolerances, and the values did fluctuate a bit, but that may have been the engine running the transmission. It was easy enough to figure an average. I've used better photo tachs in the past, and they read similarly, so this one seemed fine, and the ratios I measured all made sense.

I wish I could say that I got my money's worth on an inexpensive tachometer. The description said "In wood and metal working it can be used to accurately measure the speed of a lathe or milling machine.", so I put the tape on the spindle of my lathe and took a video of the result. As you can see, the meter never reads anything except zero RPM. I got some false hopes from looking at the contents of the memory (when I hit the "mem" button), but those numbers are clearly incorrect. They jumped from 59 RPM down to 27 RPM then 24 RPM, but 60 RPM is one revolution per second and you can see that the lathe is doing quite a bit more than that. Even though the "low battery" indicator that was mentioned in the manual was not displayed, I changed the batteries anyway (just in case) and got the same result. This unit is brand new. I received this evening. I didn't even get one successful use out of it, and I'm very inclined to believe the other reviewers who said that it only lasted once or twice.

This is a very very cheap product, but it does work. Not very accurate. I used it to adjust a diesel tach, but it wasn't accurate enough. The idle on my car should be 950 rpm +- 50 and the redline should be 5500. This was 100 rpm off at idle and 1000 off at redline. So I will have to visit a diesel mechanic and get him to adjust the tach based off injector pump timing. But it does work for stuff like fan rpm or other pointless useless stuff like that! Just don't depend on it for cars and important stuff.

I used this tachometer to measure the RPM of a router and a lathe. It requires the use of a single small piece of reflective tape attached to the rotating part. Enough tape is provided to make roughly 30 test pieces. This tape reflects the laser light from the device back to its sensor. Successive measurements give consistent results. The device reads to five digits - true RPM up to 99,999 - should be fast enough for most applications! The tachometer comes with a protective cloth case - nice for storage. Actually measuring RPM is much better than guessing. My router has a speed control dial with single-digit numbers 1 through 6. Its RPM is not linear with the numbers. I was able to calibrate the router numbers with actual RPM - helpful in setting speeds and feeds.

Arrived on time well packaged. Provides an accurate rpm. Only fault is that black tape has to be used on bright shafts which is included in the instructions.

only press button to identify the rpm. I have used it for my research purposes. There is no other functionality like recording data. That's a drawback for me.
