The reason why is b/c the Noco always independent bank chemistry settings vs the HD12 which can't (only set to 1 chemistry for both banks). In addition, it has the ability to turn off each bank independently. I wish I researched this more before buying it. I used to have lead-acid for both starting and house battery so the HD12 worked fine, keeping both batteries nicely topped off and maintained.
