For those of you who want to know what the difference is between the Easy-Close and the Auto-Close gate, here is a review. I own both gates and have used them both on the top of the stairs. I bought them both for different reasons and they each serve their purpose wonderfully. I highly recommend both but there are some differences between the two that you may need to research before settling on one that will work for you. EASY-CLOSE GATE: -To OPEN the Easy-Close gate, your thumb pushes the top button and the other fingers squeeze. - Very easy to open. My 5 year old can open the Easy-Close gate so it actually is pretty "easy". -To CLOSE the gate you must do the exact same thing as when you open it or else the gate will bounce back open. Even if you swing it closed it does not click into the fully locked position without you squeezing the handle and setting it into place again. (If you have an older child who can open the gate then they will also need to make sure to close it behind them or it'll just stay open). -This gate will stay wide open in whatever position you leave it which is great if you want it to (e.g. grandparent's house when the kids aren't around full-time, when you have a party, etc). The auto-close gate will not stay open. -Weight, style and overall bulk of both gates are similar. - Works well tension mounted on the top of the stairs. I was concerned about not hardware mounting this, especially at the top of the stairs but the tension is strong and both my husband and I can kick and pull the gate and it doesn't budge. The gate also includes hardware for mounting if you want to. - I have used the "KidCo Y-Spindles" for top of stair bannisters on one side and a wall on the other and it works just as well tension mounted. AUTO-CLOSE GATE: -To open the Auto-Close gate, your thumb slides a button on top of the gate, and unlike the easy-close gate, you must lift the entire door up and over a small plastic stopper on the bottom of the gate in order for it to open. - This is relatively easy to do and doesn't require much strength and more challenging for kids to maneuver. - I can easily lift the gate with a baby ora load of laundry in my arms on the top of the stairs without any trouble (I'm only 5'0'). - My 5 year old can slide the button but isn't tall enough or strong enough to do it while lifting the gate and probably won't be able to to until he's taller.) - If you want a gate that will keep both your big and little ones from going through then this will be a better/longer lasting choice for you than the Easy-Close gate. - No need to close this gate, it will swing closed behind you automatically. - When it slams shut it does make a loud bang noise but you can avoid this if you don't slam it or stop it just before it hits and close it quietly yourself. The Easy-Close gate is much quieter on its own but this one can be if you pay attention to it. -The auto-close feature is great for those of you who are concerned that you may forget to close the gate behind you. Convenient 1 step to open and close the gate. - If you want to keep the gate open more full time (e.g. house party, carrying things between rooms multiple times, etc) this may not be the gate for you. You'd have to prop it open somehow or tie it off with string to keep it from shutting on it's own. - Tension mounted on the top of the stairs works well and I'm paranoid about safety. Also comes with hardware mounting if you want. -Weight, style and overall bulk of both gates are similar.

We have two of these easy close gates installed, and love them. After using them for 18 months or better, I think I can safely give an honest opinion about this gate. One is installed between the dining room and kitchen, and the other at the bottom of stairs. The one at the kitchen was the first one ordered and installed and gets used several times a day, it is in the main pathway through the house. the second one came missing a few parts, almost like a previous person lost parts, and order the gate, took what they wanted, and sent it back, but Amazon took care of it with no issues. I have similar things happen at Wal-Mart and other stores, so I can't really fault the gate for this. With 5 people in the house capable of opening the gate, even our 5 year old, these gates get a LOT of use. They are holding up very well. The kitchen gate is starting to develop a bit of a squeak at certain times, it is not an every time thing. I guess it might depend on humidity or something. Very rarely the latch on the kitchen gate will stick a bit as well, but it is not a big deal. After it being opened and closed so much, and all the dust from construction in the house, it is amazing it doesn't stick all the time. I am sure I don't need to mention the sticky little hands that get all over it as well. The gate at the bottom of the stairs has not developed any of these minor issues, but it does not get used as much. Very easy to open and close. Our 5 year old, that is small for her age, can open it with no issues. There is no need to hold the latch when closing it, just push it closed. If the gate is closed to hard, it will jump across the latch and swing open the other way. I guess that is what happens when you have older kids that can get a bit of an attitude at times. Still the plastic is not cracking or breaking from such forceful closings. I have a hard time understanding why people knock stars off for installation. the gate is very easy to install. I did not even look at the directions. It is pretty self explanatory how it goes. The latch side is separated a bit, because this is what helps keep tension on the wall to keep the gate in place. there is a band holding it somewhat together, I would not cut it until the gate is installed. If the band has slipped, or gets removed before installation, it is not a big deal. having the band there may help in a narrower doorway, it might make it a bit easier to go in, and you are also not fighting with the gate wanting to swing on you while you get the adjustments tightened up. I did not use the sticky pads, or screws to install the gates, and they are for the most part staying put. The kitchen one is a painted doorway, that gets a bit sticky in humid weather, so the gate is just kind of stuck there, and does not move. The steps one is a varnished doorway, and slides a bit, but that seems to happen more when the kids try to hang on it. Not sure the PSI of tension the gate places on the wall to stay in place, but I can put it back in place if I forget it is there and trip over it and knock it out, without loosening things back up. If the ate is going between posts and not a doorway, make sure the post are sturdy though. In my opinion, if the tension from the gate moves your posts, the posts need fixed, that is not something I would want my kids climbing or leaning on. If you have your own tools, use your wrench and not the one supplied. It is capable of doing the job, but like most tools that come with stuff, it is not the best. It is thin and bit in to my hand pretty good, and is short, which takes more force to turn the adjustment nut. The lock that keeps the gate from swinging certain directions or not letting it open at all tends to fall out pretty easily. This is not a deal breaker for us. The one at the bottom of the steps can only open the one way anyways, and the one for the kitchen does not really matter, although I like it opened a certain way. If you need this, I would use some adhesive to hold it in place, or a punch and hammer to dent the metal a bit, which should also hold it in place. The bar at the bottom can trip you up if you are not careful, or not paying attention. But like other changes to a familiar place, this is bound to happen for a bit. the bar is not difficult to step over, and most people can do it in the normal stride, but the bar is there. In conclusion this is a great gate, and if I had need for more, this is what I would buy. Anything that can hold up this long to our active, rambunctious family deserves a high rating.

Now this was an easy buy for me. My husband and I live in a townhouse. 3 floors unprotected with a nearly 2 year old running around and getting into everything, just about all the TIME! With the eventual potty training through the night, 2nd step to day potty training (at least for me) I wanted to make sure that if my 2 year old was to get out of bed in the middle of the night with no one being awake, he wouldn’t accidentally fall down a flight of stairs because he can’t reach the hall light just yet and let me tell you these gates were EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Now mind you, I did a lot of research before buying these gates especially for the hefty $44.99 price tag on Amazon.com. To save me money something I always recommended is if you are buying off of Amazon they have ”Other Sellers on Amazon" content. That provides you with a list of "other sellers" that want to re-sell the product they bought, whether they didn’t like it or they don’t use it anymore and even if they bought to many. This is an AMAZING tool! You can save a lot of money on something just by using this and still get free shipping if you have an amazon prime account. This is EXACTLY what I did. I bought 3 gates for $36.25 each a nearly $10 saving on each gate and I’ll take that. Whatever extra money is a deal for me! As far as the gates, the instructions were confusing but with this gate being such a popular item, you can easily look up a "how to install" on the internet. That is another source I recommend! Everyone knows that not all instructions are easy to follow and having the internet accessible makes life just a little bit easier. Back to the gates. After I watched the "how to" video it took me 6 minutes to put each one up, you have the option to screw them into the wall or not, my only issue is they came with 3m sticky tabs to make it "more secure" but they didn’t come with extra so as soon as you stuck them to the wall that’s its, no moving it, same with the drilling. Opening and closing the gates are exceptional, it’s a one handed, open both ways, swing the gate shut, no effort needed. Like I said EXCEPTIONAL!! I LOVE these gates!! They also come with one extender each. Now say your gap is wider than 35 Inches, if you bought multiple gates and you have one gap at 32" where you don’t need the extender, you can use the spare extender to add to the other gate. This actually happened in my house and it worked out nearly perfect. I still however need one more extender but that alone saved me a lot of money. I HIGHLY recommend this product whether new or used. On Amazon.com it got 4 out of 5 stars, even with the confusing instructions I’m giving this product 5 out of 5 stars for sure!

Parents need this Magic Tool! This is AWESOME for Parents and Dog/Pet Owners alike! I don't give reviews often, but this gate really is a great price for a tool that has worked really well for our 2 year old daughter, and our 2 indoor-outdoor dogs. I recommend this gate to anyone who wants a solid/sturdy gate, or who doesn't like to bend down or step over their gate. I wish I would have come up with this idea! I've had a few different brands of these gates that block doorways, but the Munchkin really is the best of them. It's designed so that you can put the hinge on either the right or left side of the space you wish to use it, and the gate swings both ways so you can choose exactly which way you want the gate to work for you. Because of the ease of install, you can change your mind and switch it all around and try it the other way if you want, too! The install is super easy, and I know I said you don't need tools, but there is a way to use a wrench to lock the gate tightly in place. I wrenched mine to the door jams for added security/safety. But, when I first installed it, I did so with no tools at all, and having it just hand tight. It did seem like it would work just fine that way if you weren't expecting it to get bumped, or banged. For my use, I like the added security. It made me feel especially good to have wrenched it tight when I found my daughter holding onto the top of the gate and using all her weight and force to bang it back and forth. You see, she used to be able to open the other gates I tried before the Munchkin doing that exact thing and they all eventually opened. The kid is a genius at destroying things... Again, the Munchkin wins!

I've only had this installed at the bottom of our stairs for 48 hours, but I already love it. It is infinitely superior to the lift-in-place gate it replaced. My older kids (3 and 4) area both able to open the gate without a struggle, and I am bidding a grateful good-bye to the days of climbing over the old gate, lifting children over the old gate, knocking the old gate over when it was propped against a wall... it's wonderful! Two minor notes on this gate, however. I understand why manufacturers are so intent on creating text-free instructions for assembling their products. In this case, however, it would really have been nice for them to actually write "Hey, the left side of the latch will not mate with the right side of the latch until the gate is installed and you have ratcheted the bolt all the way over, bending the left-hand bar into place." Just out of the box, there's a good inch or two between the halves of the latch. I kept looking for a missing piece in the box of bits before finally deciding to try installing it and see if it became clear. It did, but some actual language could have really cleared things up in a way the picture did not. Second, there is one hokey part here: the bit that prevents the gate from swinging both directions. (See bottom left of the product photo.) The idea is that the user can configure this part to allow the gate to swing either in, out, or both. However, the part does not firmly attach to the gate, and can be easily pulled out by, for instance, a curious four-year-old. That same four-year-old can also easily flip the little levers up and down, either disabling the whole thing, or - more likely, given my kid - locking the gate entirely. Thankfully, I can't really imagine too many scenarios in which this feature is critical. At first I thought that it would be difficult to latch the gate closed without the door-stop in place, but this is Not the case: as long as you've let go of the trigger, it will slam shut with just a little pull. Since I suspect the one-year-old will discover that this part is removable within a week, I expect it will disappear pretty soon, but it will be no great loss. Finally, this gate comes with mounting hardware: you have the choice of screwing in or using included adhesive patches to mount small "sockets" on your wall or door frame. This would in theory make the gate safe enough for the top of the stairs. However, I wouldn't want to use it there because of the bar you have to step over: I'm a little concerned it would be a tripping hazard. In any case, the tension mount is Very sturdy. I don't think I could move it without unscrewing it, and I am certain the kids can't.

I have two very determined small breed dogs who defeat most baby gates. Unfortunately, the areas where I need baby gates are high-traffic hallways, so I have to use gates with doors. I've tried a number of gates over the years, and most work well. There are three things that make me like this gate better than most. First, if you want to leave the gate open, this one will do so. It does NOT automatically swing shut, which I appreciate, as most of the time I'm home these gates are open. It will stay in place wherever you swing it to. Second, this gate opens in both directions, which makes life so much easier. Third, the open/close mechanism on the top is easy to use, but you have to push from the top and bottom of the latch at the same time. Easy for me to do, but impossible for my crafty dogs. Other gates that have a foot-activated spring have been defeated by my dogs, who learned to either hop on the base of the gate or paw at a lever. My dogs are both under 15 pounds, so they don't throw themselves at the gate, which is plenty sturdy. I don't have to screw the placement cups into the walls, which is nice, but I think if you had a bigger dog, this gate would hold them as well. I also appreciate that it comes in white, as they are less noticeable when open. I've only had these gates for a few weeks, so I don't know how they'll hold up (the locking mechanism is plastic, but seems strong), but so far I'm extremely happy. I gave it five stars overall, but four stars for sturdiness, because of the plastic lock.

Just installed it. The instructions are sad, youtube videos terrible, but it's pretty basic once you spend some time figuring out how it has to go together. The pads that contact the wall are attached to a big screw, with one nut on each. You set the spacing by moving nut on the screw. Once the gate is in place, and you've tightened the nuts by hand, you can use the supplied wrench to finish rotating the nuts, which secures the gate structure. This process of tightening the nuts will gradually bring together the latch, which is separated by about three inches when you open the box. There is one plastic piece that attaches to the bottom of the gate... when the gate is in the close position, you can swivel the extension on either side to lock the gate in place... you won't be able to open it, even if you unlock the gate handle at the top. Net, you have a double-lock system if you want or need it. I bought my gate for my dogs, so I won't use the locks, but I can see this being useful if you are using it for kids. You don't have to depress the top and bottom handles to close the gate, you can just pull it shut. Once closed, you have to depress the top and bottom controls to open it again. Simple, effective. Using thick wallpads I bought separately, I was able to install in a space 37 and 1/4 inches across... but it's very near the limit. I'm ordering a 5.5 inch spacer to replace the 2.75 inch spacer that comes with the gate (which works great, I just need something a bit bigger.) You can install as many spacers as you like, they all fit together, but I don't know how many you can add before losing structural stability. With the one short space it's very stable. The hardware is sturdy enough to apply significant pressure to your walls. If you're putting up the gate in between wall studs, you can screw in some end caps, or you might want to put a strip of something stiff against the wall, perhaps spongy on one side. My baseboard did shift a bit when I first tightened the gate (my bad for not thinking about this ahead of time), so I moved the gate an inch or so to where the baseboard support was better.

I know, it's hard. Searching for the perfect baby gate kind of sucks. First, they are expensive, come in various lengths, heights, widths, colors, and are made from all different kinds of materials. Well, I am here to help you out, mama! (Or dad) THIS is the one you want because.... 1) Easy to install, and you can screw it into the wall which I HIGHLY recommend because as your child turns from that sweet little do-no-wrong perfect baby to a loud, rough, rumble tumble toddler who resembles a primate more than a person, you will want that gate to stay put when they are pulling violently at it and screaming at the top of their lungs. 2) The opening is WIDE. This is important, even if you and your entire family are small people. A wide opening means less struggle when carrying one or two kiddos, a load of groceries, or baby equipment in and out. 3) The gate opens both ways, but it can also lock on either side so you can make it only open one way or the other. That's hard to explain without seeing it, but trust me, it's nice. 4) It's metal, so it is durable. We're raising children here, not sweet little bunnies. Get that wood and nylon out of my face. 5) It's pretty. Because so much of baby proofing isn't pleasant to the eye, this is a refreshingly adorable little gate. I honestly have no cons at this point, so I would say you should go ahead and add to cart.

The gate was perfect for our needs. Easy to set-up when following the instructions. Easy opening and closing. I like the fact that is opens both ways and you can block one opening side. Make sure you take the measurements properly because the extensions for this gate are hard to find or even not available.
