Perfect Grip Shifter Replacement. Highly recommend pairing with new rear derailleur.
I purchased a used 2016 or 2017 Trek Precaliber 20 for my son as an introduction to geared bikes. Even while on his test ride I could see he struggled with grip shifter that came with it but figured I could clean it and loosen it up for him. That was not the case. When I got it home and had a chance to really check it out I struggled to shift the thing, a significant blow to my self esteem.Within a couple of rides and a quick internet search I realized this is a common problem with all grip shifter bikes (new and used) and immediately this particular Shimano shifter lever came up as solid alternative.HOW IT WORKS:Long story short, this is a perfect replacement. The thumb button is super easy and the handle is large enough that my son can use his entire hand to grab it and shift. Total game changer for him. Zero issue shifting up or down for him. For the cost this is such a no brainer upgrade. This set comes with a front shifter as well, though in my case we didn't need it since my son's bike is a 1x6. It wasn't hard to find someone who needed that left shifter piece for free.INSTALLATION:I'm no bike mechanic. I once installed a water bottle holder on a bike and I bragged about that for months until my wife told me I had to stop. There are a few YouTube videos that help with this installation and overall it is straightforward enough that if you follow the same steps that you uninstall the old shifter you can get this one back on with only a little effort. I literally took a video of myself taking the old shifter off just so I could be sure and follow the same process getting the new shifter back on. For me the issue was the cable housing and making sure I put all of that back in the right order. In my case, the removal of the grip shifter forced me to really look at the shape of the bikes rear derailleur and it was a bit of a mess. I struggled to calibrate the old derailleur for smooth shifting. I chose to go ahead and replace the rear derailleur as well and I would HIGHLY recommend this, particularly if you are upgrading a used bike. I purchased the Shimano RD-TY500 Tourney Rear derailleur for less than $20 and the combination of that plus the new shifter was incredible. This gets my highest recommendation... again as a non bike mechanic.

6 yr old can now shift gears! Easy to install for newbie
I don't know much about bike repair or maintenance, so I was a bit apprehensive about doing this myself, but I was able to replace the grip-shift shifter on my daughter's bike with this lever style shifter and get everything working in about an hour or so. I was a bit intimidated at first, but I figured worst case scenario I take my kid's mangled bike into a bike shop with my pride tucked between my legs and ask for help. Thankfully that didn't need to happen. There's a ton of videos on YouTube, so watched a few of those and it was a lot easier than I thought. The shifter is easy to use and after a few minutes my 6 yr old got the hang of it and was switching gears easily. It's easy for little hands to manipulate, and definitely doesn't require the strength that the grip shift required (heck, I had trouble with the RevoShift). As others have noted, make sure you also spend a few dollars on a replacement set of bike grips since this shifter takes up less room on the handlebar than the grip shift and your old grip will be too short. Also, I didn't realize that this was a set pair of shifters for both the front and rear derailer. Another added bonus is that the set came with cables, new cable guides, and even cable end caps. It's a total package. Quite happy with this shifter, and now my kid thinks I'm a hero. Winning.

Good to convert kids 6 speed from gripshift to trigger shift. Includes front shifter.
Happy with these for fixing my kid's 6 speed bike. I didn't use the 3 speed shifter that came with it (it seems to be friction shift while the 6 speed shifter is indexed, with one click per gear.) The grip shifter was going out, but it was alway hard for a kid to get it to shift. This one is easier. The way it works is not quite as nice as a true "rapidfire" shifter like my own bicycle has, but i could not find those for 6 speed rears. Each click forward on the lever with the thumb moves the lever a little farther to an easier gear and each press on the "+" button moves the lever back and to a higher gear. The shifters came in the original shimano packaging with the inner cables, some sheaths, and crimps. It was pretty easy to install after a youtube video search and review. I was sure of compatibility because my rear derailleur is Shimano. If you have SRAM or some other derailleur you may want to do a little research because some of them aren't compatible with standard trigger shifters. Something about the cable pull ratio.Take a couple pictures of the old install before you remove it. Don't forget you will need new, regular length handgrips to replace the short ones that went with gripshifters.
