Hella Optilux Model 2020 Review
Nice! Bought these for my '93 Jeep Wrangler. Already had a set of Optilux fog lighs mounted on top of my bumper, as well as a set of Hella 6" FF500 driving lights mounted high atop a hoop above my winch. My joke with my wife was that "I want so much light it will catch trees on fire from 200 feet". I bought these 2020's because they are such a novel concept -- driving lights & fog lights in one package, and I have found nothing else like them. I had my local fab shop plasma cut holes in the front bumper of my Jeep, and mounted these things to be flush with the bumper face. The switch that comes with them is a 3 position "fog-off-driving" switch that only allows you to have EITHER the fogs OR the driving lights on. I discarded that and wired them up so that the fogs come on with my existing Optilux fogs, and the driving lights come on with my existing Hella FF500s. So one switch powers four fog lights, and the other powers four driving lights. I use the fogs frequently -- whenever the headlights are on -- and only occasionally use the driving lights.ALL of my lights use the same 55W halogen bulbs, and the wiring is very robust and short runs direct to the battery via four relays (one relay for each set of lights).Brightness: They are very shallow (as in the depth of the housing), which I believe must impact focused light output. The 2020's fogs are not as bright as my stand-alone Optilux fogs. But only by a little -- they are ALMOST as bright, but not quite. The driving lights are also not as bright or focused as my 6" FF500's and the difference is more significant. But, even though they use the same bulb, the comparison isn't really fair -- the FF500's have a MUCH larger reflective surface with which to reflect and focus the light. By themselves, the 2020's do a good job of two things -- the fog beams are sufficiently bright, wide and at the appropriate downward angle to illuminate the ground immediately in front of the vehicle. The driving lights are sufficiently bright and focused enough to throw a good mid-range beam and augment your vehicle's high beams. Really, pretty impressive for such a shallow housing with such a small reflective surface. I have had the vehicle in a couple of rains now, and have had no problem with water entry. Even with 2 sets of fogs on at the same time, I have gotten zero flashes from vehicles coming in the other direction. Plus, since they are DOT approved with the 55w bulbs, you can legally use the driving lights along with your high beams at night. Based on their stand-alone performance, I recommend the 2020's.So, in conclusion. I have 2 sets of foggies aimed differently so that, when the low beams and the fog lights are on together, the entire surface of the ground is brightly lit, up to the distance limit of the low beams. The 2020's driving lights by contrast will light up an area low, but far ahead of the vehicle. Now that I have the 2020's, paired with my other fogs & driving lights and the vehicle's low beams, I can tackle anything at night with no worries! I can easily and brightly light up an open area to the length of a football field. Still can't seem to catch trees on fire from 200 ft though!ADDITIONAL NOTE addressing people's comments about how dim their lights are: Use of thin wire / or long distance wire runs will significantly SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the output of your lights. You will think the lights are crappy but in reality, it's your wiring job that's crappy. DO NOT wire the lights directly to the switch inside your vehicle, as you will get very poor performance by doing so. USE THE RELAYS and wire them directly to your battery. If you have to run the wire more than 3 or 4 feet, UPGRADE the wire. I used 8 gauge wire from the relays to the split and 16 gauge wire from the split to each light.Happy driving!

Not my expected Hella product performancee.
Poor light performance and projection !Not the same Hella from the ' good old days'. The 2 fuse holders for lights turned very hot after light turned on just a short while, obviously a quality issue! Will not recommend this brand. Please see new photos of the two fog lights installed with better light color and same wattage bulbs (original bulbs were like kerosene lamps) less than one year and no more then 6000 km, you can tell me if you like the quality.

Hella H71010321 Optilux Model 2020 12V Black Dual Beam Halogen Fog/Driving Lamp Kit
Ordered/installed July 2010. Replaced fog lamps with PIAA 13555 H3 Series Ion Crystal Bulbs (for the yellow glow) and the driving lights with Hella HLA-H83135241 H3 12V 35W Halogen Bulbs (no need to be too bright and they last longer). Driving lights wired up as daytime running lights (so they are on all the time, except at night). The fogs are setup to run only with the parking lights and not with the headlights. I wired in an over-ride switch to keep them both from turning on with the ignition and headlight switch. I did use rtv gasket goop around the rubber gasket after reading about leaking. No moisture problems. The 35W bulbs just ran out last month August. Replaced them with the original 55 W bulbs for now. I put back the covers without adding more rtv. Will see if the seal remains good. BTW the screws were a bit rusty, but using the right screwdriver for the job, the screws came right out (a little anti-seize would be a help). I also used an adhesive backed laminant folder (laminated without paper!) and cut out lens shaped pieces. No scratches on the lenses and still good clear light after a year! All around a good light fixture and good investment.

Excellent value and very compact combined fog and driving
Solid aluminum bodies and glass lenses should be durable, rock incidents aside of course.Easy enough to fit, although if you're doing it properly count on most of one day to run all the wires.Use M6 or 1/4 inch bolts to secure the brackets. Although bolts are included in the kit, I bought stainless ones from Ace to deter rust mites. One thing I don't like is the fog-off-driving all in one switch. I used aftermarket individual switches so I could use both, fogs synched to dipped or low beam, driving synched to high or main beam. On my Mercedes, however, the dipped beams stay on on high beam anyway, so it may be a moot point.I fitted 100 watt bulbs to mine, bought separately and possibly illegal (technicality) in some jurisdictions and they are super bright. Some people have commented on condensation inside lamps. I wouldn't worry too much as I suspect the heat from the bulbs will take care of that after a little driving. Now all I have to do is wait for dark to align them.
