Superior BassworksSTANDARD Upright Double Bass Strings Jet Black Color FULL SET

I am playing upright bass for the musical "Always, Patsy Cline." Thirteen shows this summer. The theater company wanted me to play an upright (I'm typically a bass guitarist), and borrowed one for me. The last time I played one was 20 years ago, and at that point was no expert. This borrowed bass came strung with some metal strings with very high tension.After the first few rehearsals, I knew I needed to do something, especially for the fast songs with swinging 8th note boogie bass lines, so I searched, and came across these strings. I ordered a set and had them overnighted. I installed them as soon as they arrived, and immediately experienced a night and day difference in playability. I chose the biggest size for each position that would fit in the nut without modification. As others have stated about these, there was a loss of volume, especially with the E string. I had to raise the bridge up a bit on the bass side to take care of some buzzing on the E string when fingered. I am playing through a piezo pickup and Fishman preamp, so the volume loss is not a problem at all.At my next rehearsal, the whole band told me how much better they liked the sound of the new strings. They just seem to fit that style better than the strings that were installed before. Now I can play all the notes is all of the songs without cramping up, or having to 'fudge' some of the faster passages. The strings settled in much more quickly than I thought they would, and have actually been sharping a bit on stage (when they run the AC in the theater). I assumed I'd be stretching them for a week, but I was settled in on pitch in 2 days.All in all, these strings are wonderful, and have made this job so much easier on me, not to mention the improvement in sound quality. I highly recommend them (at least for old country/western, 50's do-wop, etc). I can see where the loss of volume would be a problem in a strictly acoustic setting, though.

once they get stretched out, stay in tune...definitely not the sound from metal or bella fina, but real easy to play. I use on my Framus 5/8 which I carry on the camper to bluegrass festivals and in my music room for quick access. would not use for recording but jammin etc...so far so good...GREAT PRICE

Excellent string for those beginning to play Bass - easy on the hands and stay in tune well once stretched in. great for fast slap styles. Not the Loudest tone from the thickest E - but as it's a bump set use the next on down for a bit more definition. all in all highly reccomended.
