I have been using the other until now. I prefer the Keratin, it doesn't seem to leave my hair dry. It has a good strong color, and seems to be healthier for my hair. I would say the Keratin is better, at least for my hair. I am prone to dry, brittle hair, and live in a dry climate. **Q: Does this work on African American hair?** A: I don't see why not. It is a rich colorant that colored my hair beautifully and I have thick wavy hair. Seems the blame is being put on the manufacturer of the color. You can look at the back of the box and it will show natural color examples and then what the new red will look like after the dye is applied. The same scenario applies here to the different color combinations of makeup. Those boxes only give a few color examples when there is an array of natural hair colors, hence the color level number. Also, if you have very dark hair then the red can only show so much. If you seek to have a bright red color with dark hair then you will most likely need to lighten first. You also have to keep in mind what happens with the mixing colors. For example, Ash blonde sometimes looks green because it does not mix well with the original color. The color spectrum applies here so always research what you are mixing with your own color, ESPECIALLY IF YOUR HAIR IS ALREADY PREVIOUSLY DYED, because some colors if mixed together will not give you the results on the model on the front of the box. My niece tried bleaching her hair and it turned out a very bright yellow. When I went to sallys to get the stuff to help her get it back brown I chose a mid level brown but I also bought red and did 1:4 ratio with the red being the 25 percent added to the brown.
