Grind the sides of the old track were the aluminum has mushroomed
This works really good smoothing out a track full of humps. You have to take your door off and clean your old track ( a wire brush works great) I used a drimmel tool to grind off the sides were the track mushroomed (don't grind the top!). The instructions say use j.b weld but I used silicone to put a tiny bead inside the track. A block of wood and a hammer and it pressed right on.( Do not test fit, it's to tight on the track and it'll bend taking it back off ). I put the long full track towards the handle side and cut a short piece for the back. Put the cut end towards the frame so the factory cuts butt up. You can smooth the joint with sand paper if you want but now the door is sooooo much better, it's super smooth with no more clank clank two hand closing. Its hard not to slam it accidentally now since it rolls so easy.

If you have a "sketchy" sliding door, you NEED this!
I was looking to try and replace the threshold of my sliding door because it opened very rough. I stumpbled across this track "fixer" through Lowe's and it wa around 50 bucks. For the ease of use, totally worth it! But, then I looked on Amazon and it was like 12 bucks!! Holy cow! My door slides like a brand new door. Just pulled the door and cleaned the whole track. Squirted some siliconeon the inside part of the new track cover and hammered it on with a piece of wood and a rubber hammer. It took me about an hour and a half from start to finish. With the unbelievably weight of this door, I am pleasantly surprised by the ease of sliding now. Even if it only lasts a couple of years, it will be totally simple to replace it again for 11 bucks.

Perfect solution
Fit perfectly over the old worn track. Snapped easily in place. Had to cut a couple inches off. Use a dremel tool. Hack saw would work but use a power tool! Likely saved me hundreds of dollars.

A little more prep work than in the Video
My track just had bumps in it. It was loud and obnoxious to open the sliding door. The wheels on the door have been solid since I moved in but the track started to give about a year ago.I took the time to get a calking gun and the silicone just like in the video. Once I started the installation, I struggled to get the edges to 'grip' around the track. Just eyeballing it, it appeared that the unworn areas of my track were too wide. After a lot of trial and error, I ended up taking a small metal cylindrical rod through the inner side of the product. I kind of got lucky that on one side it was a phillips head and on the other side it was a flat cylinder type. My point is that I had to widen the inner part to fit my track. The Phillips head side allowed me to use the pointy part to push the rod through and widen the very edge just enough to put the other side in(this random tool was L shaped, phillips side on one end, flat cylinder on the other). Ultimately this process of pushing the rod through the middle portion somehow caused the product to bow or arch(even after stopping the applied pressure). It wasn't a problem though and in fact seemed to make the installation a little easier as it allowed me to focus on getting the tip in the track without having to worry too much about getting any other part to line up to start out.I basically was able to follow the rest of the video instructions from here without problems.I'm not sure if I got lucky or what but so far it appears to be working out amazingly. The sliding glass door is a little harder to push than before but it is very smooth and most importantly, it is quiet.Side note: I know a lot of people are complaining about bowed or bent tracks but considering my experience so far- A bent or bowed track would not prevent you from using this or allowing it to work.My current concern is if the track will stay on since I had to sacrifice some of the gripping edges to get it to fit on.

Perfect solution to our old sliding door
Holly molly!!!! I was able to fix the sliding glass door that wouldn't open anymore, due to a severely bumpy and damaged track with Prime-Line D 1579-C 1/4 x 48 In. Stainless Steel Sliding Patio Door Repair Track! I researched solutions and am so glad i stumbled across a you tube video that suggested placing one of these stainless steel things on top of the beat up track (with a little silicone in between to ensure a permanent position). I had bought new wheels, and all sorts of things to try and repair the sliding door, and nothing worked. We just moved into this house and the last thing we needed was an expensive new sliding door, just because of the destroyed state of the track. Once i knew what i wanted, and after measuring everything carefully, i looked for the right track. There are lots of options out there, most of them $50+. The Prime-Line D 1579-C 1/4 x 48 In. Stainless Steel Sliding Patio Door Repair Track was a beautiful, beautiful find. It had the right price point, the right dimensions, and it made a PERFECT match and solution to our problem. THE SLIDING DOOR NOW ACTUALLY OPENS- SMOOOOOOOTHLY!!!!!! WOW! What a fantastic product!!!! Thank you so much for creating the Prime-Line D 1579-C 1/4 x 48 In. Stainless Steel Sliding Patio Door Repair Track!!!!!!!

Inexpensive and Easy Fix
I put this over a rail that had actually split in one area. The door had been hard to slide for a while. If you have one in the same condition, I'd recommend trimming the split part before fitting the new cap. I tried to put the cap over the split are and it got hung up on that area. I had to trim it on the fly and because the JB Weld dries quickly, it went on a little crooked over that spot. I added more JB Weld on the underside and hoped for the best. I worried it might be an issue but thankfully the door slides smoothly. Very inexpensive and easy fix. It's been on a few week snow and still working great. Hope it holds up over time but at this point I give it 5 stars.

Good concept but not quite right
I would have liked this to work as it was cheaper than new track piece, but… The design of this was too wide and added height to the existing track which meant the wheels didn’t sit over the metal piece well enough and kept coming off the track. Just save yourself the trouble and get a brand new track piece if you’re here. Don’t forget for this to work you have to glue this to your existing track and to each other. JB weld is another $6 or so.
