Well-made and beautiful
I had never played this type of instrument before, so I didn't really know what to expect. This is a well-made instrument. It will need a set-up after you get it, but that's to be expected. On mine, there were minor intonation issues that will be solved by lowering the nut a bit. Every instrument is different. The top is solid spruce -- a nice tight-grained spruce too! The back and sides appear to be cherry, although I'm not sure. And I can't tell what the neck is made of, but I would guess maple. The stain is very dark in the neck. The instrument as a whole is quite beautiful, with matched halves on the back. Gloss finish on all, with no obvious flaws. The frets are dressed well, with no sharp edges anywhere. The neck was straight and showed no signs of detachment. The bridge seems to be glued securely, which it would have to be with this kind of string tension. The action seemed just about right, just a bit high at the nut which a set-up should fix. Notes tended to be a bit sharp until about fret 5, when it settled back into tune. Intonation was spot on at the 12th fret. Intonation was also consistent on strings within each course. The volume is not all that I had hoped, possibly due to the very light gauge strings on the 1st and 2nd courses. Not knowing anything about standards for this instrument, I assume this is normal.I'm primarily a ukulele player, and the transition to the neck width and spacing between courses will present a challenge to me. But if you are already comfortable with a guitar, especially a 12-string, you shouldn't have much problem playing this. All in all, a very good instrument!
