how do you determine if you need a 3 or 4 step?

Tailgate sat over 36" with camper on the truck. Had a 3 step and it was way to steep. The 4 is great.

Could this be used as bow boat ladder when the boat is beached (assuming the steps are long enough to reach the beach)?

I don't see why not. However, the top of the ladder hooks to a bracket that would have to be securely mounted to outside of the boat.

Yes there is a mounting bracket that comes with it, I have a small wooden deck on my TC that I attacked the bracket to. It had the lag bolts with it also, great set of steps.

How high is the rise between steps?

About 5", nicely progressive and not too steep. Best stair-steps for my camper I could have hoped to find. Seem expensive? Not at all, real quality & utility. So glad I didn't but some cheap step.
