i'm 5-10 so I'm not sure, but I don't see how it would be uncomfortable. Personally, I think it would actually be beneficial to have a mat that is proportionally larger to have more space to move around.

Can it be used by a teacher who stands near a smart board all day?

It certainly could! Just be sure that when you aren't using Topo, you slide it away from any high traffic areas. It will keep your classroom safer, and it's just good housekeeping!

I know this thing is amazing on floors (I've tried one in a showroom), but how is it on carpet? Does that defeat the purpose?

The purpose is to give a dynamic standing area to keep you moving while you work at a standing work station. Carpet wouldn't offer that kind of dynamic (fun) space for your feet. I use mine on carpet and it serves it's purpose for me.
