These are perfect for my purposes, though I can guess that others may not like their plainness and brown-paper appearance. I happen to like plainness and practicality. The designer has succumbed to the regrettable temptation to put SOME decoration on them (a faint border with curlicues at the corners), but you can turn them over to have a completely plain surface, which is what I do.

I eat at my desk at work and bought these for quick and easy cleanup after lunch. The size is just right and the paper is thick enough to keep splashes and light spills from seeping through. So for me, this item is about function. However, if you're looking for style, these would also work for a casual picnic or dinner. The scalloped edges are cute, and these is a cream-colored frame design near the perimeter of the placemats. I have bought these many times and will continue to do so.

I used these to print Bible verses on and provide placemats for walk to Emmaus. They are beautiful and I love the white swirly detail at the edges. They turned out beautiful once I printed on them. They are also beautiful by themselves because of the white and the scallops. They are thin enough they went through my printer just fine. Very good value for the money. The size was perfect for a place setting.
