Visible Learning made Visible for Me!
This book helped me to reflect on my years of teaching reading and writing. I learned so much about what works and what doesn't work in literacy backed up by research. My understanding has been made much clearer by this easy to read book. This is a must read for every teacher of literacy: K-12. I highly recommend it!

Good Read
The chapters in the book focus on surface learning, deep learning, and transfer, and how to help students in each type of learning. The chapters, Laying the Groundwork for Visible Learning for Literacy, Surface Literacy Learning, Deep Literacy Learning, Teaching Literacy for Transfer and Determining Impact, Responding When the Impact Is Insufficient, and Knowing What Does Not Work are laid out clearly, giving specific examples of what teachers can do. The book also gives examples of how to determine if your strategies are working, using progress monitoring, screening students, etc. I also liked that in addition to providing examples of beneficial strategies (or what teachers should do), the authors point out common strategies that don’t increase student achievement. One of my favorite parts of this book is the addition of the effect size of each strategy, which is listed in the margins. When looking at how our instructional decisions impact students, this is a great way to open the conversation or look deeply at data-based decision making. Though effect size should not be the primary rationale for choosing a strategy, I found the addition interesting.I feel that this book is a good resource for educators looking to increase their knowledge of instructional strategies and their efficacy. The video links, through QR codes, and websites would also be helpful for teachers. Overall, the book is more technical and “textbook-like,” but gives a wealth of information. The book could also be helpful for literacy coaches as they work with teachers to determine how and why a strategy is effective.

So important to read this!
This book is great! If you teach you need this book, it will make you truly think about every lesson you teach. Next year our school is focusing on everything this book talks about.

useful for the classroom
I bought this for a class I was taking and it was very interesting. I rarely read books like this on my own, but I read the entire book throughout the course. It had very useful information to use in my classroom.
