The Flak 36 8.8cm Anti-Aircraft Cannon, popularly known as the "88," was one of Germany's most lethal weapons of World War II. Originally designed for high-altitude anti-aircraft fire, the deadly effects of the gun's high velocity shells versus ground targets, armored vehicles in particular, and became a thing of legend. The "88" was typically set up on a cruciform mount for anti-aircraft defense, but the same gun/mount combination was often "dug in" to deep pits for anti-tank/anti-personnel role.
