I've used couvre in the past and i find it has an odd chemical odor. does dermmatch have an obvious smell?

Yes it has a chemical smell which it attracts over time. I suspect the smell is similar to older makeup you eventually need to throw out. However, the shelf life of DermMatch is considerably shorter

My hair is somewhere between dark brown and black, with minimal intermittent grey. Is it better to use the dark brown or black Dermmatch concealer?

My hair is exactly the same and I used the dark brown and it worked just fine. I haven't tried the black, maybe that would have been better or not, but I am happy with the dark brown. It may also depend on your skin tone. My skin is very bright white on my scalp so the dark brown worked to create a shadow. It does not totally darken the skin. I don't think it is meant to do so. It just creates a translucent shadow over the skin, but the effect of it somehow makes my hair look thicker and makes my scalp less visible. If you have a deeper skin tone maybe the black powder would have more effect. If not, I recommend the dark brown.

How is this better/different from a product like joan rivers great hair day powder?
