I emptied about a gallon in a few hours and then the skimmer was basically broken in. Another week to really dial it in. I have been leaving it rather wet in order to keep the main body clean. I just clean the collection cup every few days and it is way easier to do preventative maintenance like that then remove the whole skimmer once a month or several months even. The collection ranges from dark green/yellow to nearly black and smells awful when emptying however no bad smells in my office near display tank. The collection cup just sits on top of the unit with an o-ring and pops right off, so there is nothing to take apart when cleaning time comes. It is simple to fine tune the water level with the gate valve. The venturi clips onto the unit and is extremely easy to clean and is not prone to clogging with salt unlike other brands. I was looking to upgrade our skimmers, and a fellow aquarist recommended the reef octopus brand, and I am glad we went with them.
