Derwent Graphic Pencil B

I draw the image before painting it. The H pencil is very good because it is not too dark and lifts off easily and does not leave a lot of 'residue' - i.e. pencil dust.

The pencils are good quality, however, they came in a manila Prime envelope with no protective cover over the pencils (they could be wrapped in cardboard or something else to protect the lead). One of the pencils had a smashed lead tip. Delivery was great!

I have tried several different brands of graphite, but I keep coming back to this one. Though it's not the most expensive pencil, the quality of the lead is difficult to match among other brands. It is smooth and contains very few grainy spots. It also responds more willingly and sharpens with ease. The wood encasement shaves evenly and rarely splits as well.

I bought 3 of the pencils to use for my upcoming archaeology class and all 3 arrived snapped and broken. I don't understand why the pencil needs to be sharpened prior to arrival. All of them broke and now I need to waste more of the pencil fixing it.

I have been drawing for almost 30 years, and have used many different brands of pencils. This is one brand I try to avoid. The wood is low quality, and will not sharpen smoothly, leaving the end chunky, and the lead seems to be inferior quality. As happens, sometimes pencils get dropped on the floor. The lead may actually shatter inside the pencil, so when you try and sharpen it, pieces of lead simply fall out in half inch pieces, making the pencil worthless. Better quality pencils can take this kind of abuse; this brand cannot. In a pinch, I've had to buy this brand several times, and have had the exact same problem with each one. (I mostly use 2B, so hence I'm reviewing this particular hardness and no other) The last two I bought, just a couple days ago (again, I was in a pinch, had no other brand to choose from) I have already used them up to a nub, even though I was EXTREMELY careful to not drop them or even jostle them unnecessarily. I went through BOTH pencils on ONE drawing. Unacceptable. This should not happen! You shouldn't have to baby your pencils.

I have many of the "B" pencils from Derwent. They beat any biro for general use - photocopy well and are so pleasant to use. You can even write music with them. Don't "hide" secrets in your computer. Write them on recyclable paper with these pencils and lock them up in a cupboard. Nobody can hack them there!

I love these pencils for any drawing as they are so light be easily visible. I would recommend these to any paper project where the lines are to be removed.
