Style beats substance (spoiler free)
You know exactly what is going to happen in this film. If you have seen the poster or the trailer you know where it is going. Even if you go into the film blind, the synth soundtrack tells you where the film is going. But it's all done so well! This is very much a film of two halves. The first sets everything up and develops things nicely through Stevens' charming and likeable performance and the slow menacing soundtrack. Then about an hour in character development and set up is done and the soundtrack tells you it is a sprint to the finish. With increasingly stylised scenes and lighting and the volume of the soundtrack being progressively cranked. This film has been described as "The Bourne Identity crossed with the Terminator", and this is pretty accurate. Chances are you have seen many of these parts before, but the overall execution brings it all together nicely.I enjoyed it, as did the wife; a rare thing indeed.

I give up
Amazon Prime. More dud films than you can shake a stick at, and this one was a real doozy. Wooden, dreadful, sluggish. It was so bad I can scarcely be bothered to write anything. Why did I watch this all the way to the end? Because I had had a long day at work and just wanted something to watch? Because all the good films cost money?

Dan Stevens thrills and chills in this cult classic in the making.
A terrific thriller with a stellar cast and the right amount of macabre twists.Dan Stevens gives a standout performance as the magnetic, seductive, yet utterly unnerving David: the mysterious house guest who claims to be the friend of a family's deceased eldest son, David seems determined to fix all the problems this troubled family has but Is David too good to be true? Does David have something to hide?Maika Monroe also shines as the strong female co-lead, Anna: the older sister suspicious of David and his motives for helping her family.Better than it's premise, this film is a triumph of style AND substance without either bogging down the movie.Smart, suspenseful, filled with bloody action and strong performances - The Guest is highly enjoyable and well worth your time.

Waste of talent!
Oh dear, what was Dan Stevens thinking? I know a lot of Brits go over to the States and appear in mediocre productions in order to get recognition, but this often means getting mixed up with a production which is so far below their talents that they suffer. This movie is one such production. Dan Stevens has proven himself in a multitude of films, not to mention Downton Abbey. He really did not need this rather poor movie in his biog. Apart from his own performance, the others were very throwaway and weak. Even the actor who played the father character, whom we've seen many times before was underplayed and unbelievable. Stevens was suitably mildly psychotic, dangerous and likeable which played well. But the script was predictable, the direction was weak and the other cast left me apathetic as to their fate. And the ending? Oh, the ending! What a surprise - NOT!If you haven't watched this movie, don't bother. Dan Stevens has appeared in many other far better productions. Watch one of those.

No cliche left behind
Mysterious chap appears, pretending to be a friend of a family's son killed in action while serving in the Army. Then the doom-laden music sets in. Lots of insinuating oneself & solving the usual screen family problems ensue (nerdy kid bullied at school, daughter with no-good boyfriend, mediocre husband: common fare). A veritable cornucopia of sinister stares (Dan Stevens is a veritable master of the sinister stare: hence the extra point) & doom tunes make sure that we all know to expect the utterly predictable reveal (no spoilers: I mean, you'll suffer enough just by watching this). Seriously: the script does consist mostly of Dan Stevens going from smarmy to sinister. Just to make sure everybody gets the hint that he is not a good egg at all. Even your 95 year old grandmother who never watches anything but gardener's world will get it. Low budget shoot-outs follow. More sinister stares. Loads of gore. Doom tunes abound. Contract killers get felled. Bystanders get killed. Big final showdown drags on & on & on. Even aforementioned grandmother thinks it's all a bit slow. But, oh horror, a sequel is threatened! God have mercy upon our souls!

Nice set
Item arrived, surpringly undamaged looking at the shocking packaging from AmazonGreat set, solid box with nice extrasWorth £40?...not sure, I am aware that the licencing of the soundtrack for the set pushed the price up.Its a 4k disc, not a massive upgrade on the blu Ray, HDR pops a bit to make it look a bit better, the audio is the same as the blu ray.If your a massive fan of the film the set is a no brainerIf you just wanna see the film its £1.50 in CEX.

A very vague film that decided to be vague throughout and in the end vaguely annoying.
Initially this film had a universal soldier vibe and had me guessing and I was very in to it, then a weird thing happened, the filmmaker decided three quarters of the way through the film to just take a 90 degree turn in a random direction and involve small parts of the film in a major way that had little to no substance in the first three quarters of the film and no investment by the audience. In the end I would say that I enjoyed the first half, would I suggest people pay to watch this film, definitely not.

Terminator mixed with Dawson's Creek
Was a recommended watch from a friend, and whilst it wasn't bad it certainly lacked a lot of the thought-provoking subplot, and tension/thriller elements from The Terminator. It was a little corny with the dialogue and definitely not going to set the world alight, but in saying that, it was fairly enjoying in an easy watch kind of way, and definitely better than a lot of films out there. Think more along on-par with the poorer Marvel MCU films, good production qualities but just needing an extra bit of gusto to get it over the line properly.
