Q: Can you design well in the software? Can the software be purchased outside of the maching?

The software comes free with the machine. You can download the software here and try it out to see if it would meet your needs: https://www.silhouetteamerica.com/software#silhouette-3D The software allows you to import STL and OBJ formats, so you could use a more robust design software if preferred and then save files to use in Silhouette 3D. Version 1.1 of Silhouette 3D has added some basic operations for combining two shapes via UNION, DIFF, INTERSECT, etc., so there are some interesting things that can be done by creating two shapes and then sculpting via intersecting areas.

Q: Does it have auto leveling and a heated build platform? can you print from an sd card or does it have to be hooked by usb to computer?

You have to have a computer. It doen`t have a heated bed. Uses any of the right size PLA filament. It will only print from the Silhouette 3D software. I can not tell you how well it works mine arrived damaged and although Sillouette has been great working with me, it has been over a month. Hopefully when I get home next week the part will be there that I need to fix it. Self leveling? Sorry, I don't know the answer to that one.

Q: they are selling replacement print head including the heating element already on Silhouette site. Do they have issues with these?

I bought a replacement head when they were on sale and am so glad they did. After a few months of use, my printer head got totally clogged with filament. I cannot get it to come out at all. I simply swapped in my spare head, and only lost the hour or two it took to get it done.

Q: Has anyone not been able to load the software because of a video driver

I haven't had this, but make sure your drivers are up to date. That's usually the problem when this type of error occurs.
