Lowering the volume
This is perfect for our virtuous, who loves playing at all hours. He's able to play as normal and hears the notes just fine. The only thing is that it limits the amount of volume that can be made. Perfect to allow mom and dad a little quiet time to sleep.

Very Effective
This mute cut the sound volume at least by half, maybe more. Living in an apartment, this is a must-have product. And, no offensive smell like most rubber products.

Good practice mute
I bought this product to practice at home without disturbing my family members, and it works pretty well. It doesn’t diminish the sound very much, but it does make a difference.

Simple, cheap, effective
This mute definitely works and is extremely simple to use. Just make sure its completely seated on the bridge. I can play in one room and my family can sit in the room over and not hear me at all.

About 12dBA reduction and high frequency rolloff
Mutes work by giving inertia to the bridge and, in the case of soft rubber like this, converting some sound energy into heat. The heavier they are, the more inertia, so the metal ones may give you 18 or 24dBA down. At the risk of damaging your instrument of course when they fall off. This light rubber provides about 12dBA which is the equivalent of closing an ordinary household door. I would say this would allow practice in a hotel room to maybe 10pm and after that better to use a metal one. It’s too much muting for performance use; the tourté mutes are designed for that. But this is perhaps just right for saving your left ear from all that sawing. It does take away much of the power of the instrument of course, but it will stop you from holding back on your bowing, so when you do take it off, you’ll wail.Be sure to take a cuticle scissor and trim off any rubber tailings muting the strings directly on these.

Violin Mute
Exactly what my son needed for practicing his violin. Works as it should. You can still hear him playing just tones it down.

Does not work as well as I had hoped
It does not mute the violin as much as I expected. I have never used a mute before, so that may just be the nature of the device. It also arrived smelling awful. I washed it and set it out to air but it still stinks after a couple of days. It was too cheap to bother returning, but I ordered rubber-covered metal mute to replace it. It makes the violin sound warmer but does not seem to reduce the volume much. On a positive note, it fit the bridge on my 4/4 violin perfectly and was very easy to install.
