Perfect for those starting or self-taught guitarists.
I played guitar for about 3 years, around 15 years back. Because of this there is a certain amount of muscle memory I can call on, but my main problems were that I was lazy and would only use 3 of my 4 fretting fingers and so I'm recalling bad technique and practices. This book gets you to avoid all of these mistakes by giving clear instructions on how to get off on the right foot. As someone that used to play I'm amazed at the simple things I overlooked, and I wish I'd started off with something like this. Perhaps my favourite aspect of this book is that within one exercise, it ramps the difficulty up over time by challenging you to play along with a metronome and up the tempo gradually as you become more proficient - even some of the most basic exercises become challenging with the addition of pace and this stops you from resting on your laurels. As outlined in the book, it's best to use this as a small part of your practice. I tend to do exercises for around 20-30 minutes, followed by an hour or so of properly playing. If you own a gaming console and struggle to find accurate tabs for guitar parts, I'd strongly recommend buying a copy of Rocksmith Remastered (like Guitar Hero, but with an actual guitar) - it's the perfect way to level up your playing and put the exercises from this (and other books by Joseph) into immediate effect. Right, back to the guitar practice!

A complete workout for guitar for beginners
With eleven chapters starting from the basics of how to play a guitar and the "first fretting movements" to "hanner-ons and pull-offs," this has exercises to cover just about everything a beginner needs to become proficient (weil, ok, the hammer-ons and pull-offs are probably intermediate level skills) in short punchy easy to follow exercises. Remember, as the author states, the idea is not to become expert at the exercises but to use them to become skilled at playing music and as such they are the perfect bridge to help the beginner guitarist achieve this - and more. I've bought a few of this series of books and intend to purchase more.

Helping me get back to guitar
At one point I was a pretty good guitar player. That was decades ago. Now that I have more time on my hands I've picked the guitar up again and am using this book to help my get back into it. It's a good resource. I recommend it.
