Perfect Canned Unsweetened Chestnut Paste from France
Since the 1970s I have enjoyed making a seasonal dessert from a French cookbook; pave aux marron. In recent years I have had trouble finding the canned unsweetened chestnut paste I had used for many years in Seattle, WA. Couple of years ago a specialty store ordered for me, but the cans were tiny, the paste was sweetened, and it didn't work very well. I was concerned in reading the reviews on this product, but this is exactly what I had hoped for, and shades of yesteryear. (At Holiday Season, I make a chocolate covered frozen "chestnut block" for a rich and special dessert. Easy, special, delicious but requires this as a must-have ingredient.) This also was a reasonable price.

CHESTNUTS
I love chestnut sauce over meat, so I bought this and made my own. Luckily, it had a recipe on the label because I never made it before. It came out rather well.

Bad product
After I received the container I opened it and looks like it is having spoiled spots on the top the color is not even close to the picture this looks. like a liver patte and don't even taste like chestnut as I know do not recommend to buy this product.

Cheaper, but not as good as Clement Faugier
This is the cheapest chestnut puree and it's reflected in the flavor. I like the convenience of the large size for my baking needs, but I found that this Sabaton puree has a bit of a burnt smell and taste to it. It's quite subtle, and it's possible I just got a bad batch, but I don't think I will take the risk on another can. I felt the burnt smell overpowered the chestnuts, and it didn't go away even after I tried mixing in sugar and vanilla. I much prefer the smell and taste of Clement Faugier's unsweetened chestnut puree, which doesn't have any of the burntness, even though it's more expensive.
