Not a good idea to attempt to pound the nylon into the wall. Go to a big box store, Waliworld or other hardware store, there are options. Best to have a basic tool kit around the house, you seem to already have a hammer.

can you hang these with wall mounting material instead of screws?

Look, technically you can do whatever you want. I used the 16lb Velcro command wall mounting stuff rather than screws. It works fine for me, but I'm only displaying graded cards on them - very light stuff. I also put several on the back. I doubt you could put anything on the shelves with any real weight on it if you decide to not use the screws.

what is this product made of?

It seems to be some kind of laminate. It's lighter than solid wood. The shelves wouldn't hold anything very heavy, but they are doing just fine with framed photos and small ceramics.
