People say to place a 10g weight and then weigh the amount that is too light, but that doesn't work as far as I see for things still below 5mg, so if this thing can't detect a difference of 5mg from 0 to 5 or from 1gram to 1.005... why is it called a scale accurate to .001, sure it displays that, but thats pretty much a guess I can now see... its sad that basically to get a better scale, and not by much you need to spend 200$, and even then you won't be able to measure 1mg, just do better than this piece of junk, which I own and love, but I am annoyed at its misrepresentation of the facts, I guess fraudulent advertisement is now considered marketing huh, how the other guy can in good concience tell you this thing weight very well, i dunno, I mean its the best 20$ scale you can get, but no where near good enough for anything other than .01g measurements really, since scales need to have a 10x accuracy factor if they are worth their salt in order to round up or down to what it shows on the screen. In other words it needs to be more accurate than it displays, nearly alll .1scales are at least accurate to .05, unless their chinese garbage. But somehow this precision scale goes in the opposite direction, and alleges to display values I have no idea how it determines when it literally doesn't have the accuracy to... must be some hella funky coding for a scale that in its own manual states an error rate of plus o minus 5mg but still allege to tell you the exact mg as if that figure have a better than 1 in 10 chance of being right. Sorry the scale isn't bad for the money, I just wish they made one that actually did this, and was affordable to the public. **Q: Has anyone used this for weighing powder for reloading ammunition? Would you recommend it?** A: As long as you use check weights or calibrating weights (same thing just different terminology) to calibrate the scale you don’t have to worry about a thing since this one is the most accurate ones I could find other than the gempro 250 which is a $200 scale but I’d still use this one for reloading as long as I have check weights which I’ll always have. **Q: Can it weigh in milligram precision in very small incrimental measures w/o auto-taring? A problem w/ many scales is to auto-tare tiny weight changes.** A: Amanda: I suggest that at 1 mg. precision, the surface the scale sits on, and the degree of level are very important. The heavier, denser, and more solid the base is, the better the accuracy. Vibrations also are very important. Setting the scale on a kitchen counter top (not heavy, dense, and stable) with a refrigerator running anywhere close (say, within 10 or 20 feet) will throw off the accuracy -- probably by a few milligrams, easily. Something heavy enough to provide a very stable base will be quite difficult to level. While I'm not sure exactly the level of precision required, it would not surprise me if it needs to be 1 mm/meter, which would be difficult to achieve without a precision leveling device. I can't tell you that the scale is as precise as advertised, but I do think it would be difficult to find a base in the average home that would allow you to make such a precise measurement. All that said, I haven't shopped for a scale base that might be made for the purpose - though buying one that would be heavy enough would make it significantly more expensive than the amount you paid for the scale. **Q: Can I weight diamonds, ruby and gold?** A: You can anything that has more than or equal to .001 which is a miligram, very small measurement but as long as you have calibrated it right and not damaged the plate and use a level surface, you will have very accurate weight. Always remember conversion, 1mg is .001 and 100mg is .100 on this type and a solid gram is always 1000mg no matter what, different things have different densities so just because one looks more than another or less dont think its broke, unless of course the same material is weighing different .
