I loved this book and was totally absorbed in the struggle of a shy student who quickly finds his tough side as he battles against a gang of thugs and corrupt police during a hot summer in the Greek Islands. There is plenty of violence, cunning, treachery and sex - and the writing is so good that the reader feels the heat, tastes the sea-water and smells the bare skin.

I really enjoyed this debut novel and thought it was constructed with plenty of dramatic tension. Lots of twists and a great arc of the narrative. It transported me back to a landscape of Greece that I remember from years ago...though I'm glad I never met some of the unpalatable figures whom Alistair encounters. I'd definitely recommend this book.

Chopped in a few sittings - I couldn't put it down. A visceral thriller if there ever was one. An astonishing debut novel that takes you to the islands of Greece. Don't expect an easy holiday though... you'd be in for a nasty surprise.
