Has anyone tried going thru tsa with this toolkit. i don't like to check my bags unless i really need to.

I have gone through TSA many times with this. It is usually fine, but my bag has been pulled off the conveyor a couple times after seeing them on the X-ray. They always return it to me once they realize it's just a repair kit, though.

I've tried to figure it out but.. what is the 1-pc. magnetic parts mat? it's not magnetized itself..

Only the white side of the parts mat is magnetic. If you try to put screws on the black side, they will not stick. It is also not very strongly magnetic, because that would make it very difficult to get the tiny screw such as those used in iPhones picked back up off of it.

bits are made of chrome vanadium ?

I am not sure of there composition but, I can tell you that of the 3 set tool like the 28301, the bits are definitely higher quality. I tried the manufacturers website but no luck. Hope I was at least a little helpful.

Yes, the handle magnetizes the tip to hold it securely in place along with the screws. I found it works quite well.
