Addition to stock
Arrived in time for my next project. Adding a voice to my Arduino nano. Needed a few more as stock was down to last one

Pin spacing wrong
The pin spacing wouldn't allow the device to be plugged in to the breadboard without forcing and bending the pins. So if mounting onto a Veroboard it would be the same.I used flying leads to power and program for testing, I found the same as other reviewers it did respond correctly to the library.

Not a advertised in the photos - cheap inferior copies
These are not true DFRobot style DFPlayers being advertised. They are cheap copies with a different chip set to the original. In the advertising here they are making us think that we get the true original chip set by showing us a photo of the chips underneath. They plainly show the larger chip as having 24 pins (12 each side) as per the official product. What you get is cheap a copy with the main chip having only 16 pins (8 each side).See my 2 photos. In my photo with 2 DFPlayers side by side, the item on the left is what you get here and the item on the right is a true DFRobot purchased from a reputable supplier. These cheap copies do not respond fully to the DFRobot library commands for Arduino.Blatant false advertising!Returning straight back for a refund.

Test on breadboard BEFORE use
I have built six identical units using a different brand of DFplayer. Foolishly I expected these units to work identically and promptly soldered two into my next two units. The first did not accept the (DFPlayer mini fast) play folder command and returned a serial comms error. The second refused to see the SD card. Testing the remaining four units all confirmed that they would not respond to the play from folder serial command. The (five) units that read the SD card all interrogated the SD card to determine the number of folders and the number of tracks in the folder but stubbornly refused to play any of them. I could step through the tracks (operating a next track hardware button), and the units confirmed it was playing BUT I could not specify a folder/track to play.So check on a breadboard before reaching for the soldering iron. The Amazon returns policy requires the units to be "as sold" and two are definitely not that after desoldering!

Excellent
Great value for incorporating into our model diorama book nooks to give added audio.
