If you google 'connectors for wire cube storage', you will see a number of sellers, including on Amazon. Saw a set of 4 for about $7. They seem to fit universally.

Q: What is the actual weight capacity of each cube?

Approximately 14-15 lbs. Some brands claim more; they do not deliver. Don’t believe claims of higher weight carrying capacity.

Q: Can I put 12” cubbies in this stand?

Hello, thank you for your question.The modular unit measures 11.8 by 11.8 inches inside each square, and the 12-inch cubby is a bit large for the square, It is recommended that you use a cubby of about 11 inches

Q: Are they heat resistant? I want to place a heating lamp on top of my hedgehog’s pen using these to hold the lamp.

These are metal. They will conduct heat. I would think that if exposed to concentrated heat for too long they may damage anything on which they are sitting unless it is something like tile, stone, concrete. Just my guess.
