It rotates in clockwise, counterclockwise and bidirectional. clockwise and counterclockwise have 4 cycles of 225 rotations that equals 900 tpd. the bidirectional has 4 cycles which rotates 225 in both directions. Yes, there are individual settings for each watch. Almost any automatic watch will wind properly on selection C, which is Clockwise then Counter Clockwise. Then for each watch you have off, on and delayed start of 12 hours. My winder has performed flawlessly.

How often do the batteries need to be replaced

Using the adapter and have never replaced batteries.
