The translation of this bible, the NABRE, is the one you'll hear read aloud at mass in the United States. And despite this version more-or-less being the official translation for American Catholics, it's hard to come by quality bibles of this translation. So when I came across this one, I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, it's sort of a no-nonsense bible. It doesn't have any pictures or tables intermingled with the text that may distract you from reading the scriptures themselves. There are introductions to each section of the bible: pentateuch, historical books, gospels, new testament letters, etc. There are also introductions to each book of the bible. There are some well-made, detailed maps at the very back of the bible as well as several blank pages for personal notes. Another thing I personally like is that there are no "presented to" or dedication pages in the front. As someone who typically buys bibles for myself, I always found these pages a bit annoying. I'm perfectly content to just write my name inside the front cover rather than filling out a page that says "Presented to myself from myself on the occasion of I wanted a new bible." One interesting quirk about this bible is that the notes and cross-references are not in the margins or at the bottom of the page; instead, they're all at the end of each respective book in their own section. The benefit to this is that if you're just casually reading or doing lectio divina, you won't be distracted by said references and can just focus on the text itself. The drawback is, if you want to read the notes and cross-references, you're going to be doing some extra page flipping back and forth. In which case, I highly recommend getting some bible tabs as it'll make getting to these sections a lot easier. I'd say the only negative about this bible is the font. It's large print as advertised, but the style and thickness of the letters on the page mean that you can see the text from the next couple pages through the paper. This in turn causes the page to look a bit more busy and cluttered than it needs to be. It's still easy to read however, but this is something the publisher should consider tweaking in the future. Still, considering the price and everything else mentions, I'd say it's worthy of 5 stars. Review: Best Bible Purchase - I love, read and collect bibles. I am happy to say this bible is absolutely at the top of my collection! The size and weight is perfect to carry whenever you are on the go and the print size is easy on your eyes. I strongly recommend choosing the thumb index version for easier chapter selection. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed in the least.

Love this bible!
Well laid out. Large font is easy to read. The soft, leather-like cover is very flexible, and opens flat on the desk or table. Now I just need to read it more often, lol.

Exactly what I was hoping it would be
Although I'm not a particularly religious person, I set a goal for myself to read the entire bible for a few different reasons. I didn't have one myself so I got online to find one. My main criteria was it needed to be easy to read and correct with the translation. In my research for a Bible I learned about the difference in translations and was a little wary of what choice to make. I was raised Catholic so I determined the NABRE to be the one I was looking for. Once I decided on the version to get it came down to readability. The criteria for this was font size, font type, and physical traits of the book itself. The cover is a very good, flexible leatherish material that I wanted along with the smith-sewn pages so that it would hold open to the pages on its own. It does that nearly perfectly, the exception being the very first pages at the front and back, maybe 10-15 pages each way before its holds open on its own. The font is nice with some subtle flares on some letters that make it feel just a little more thoughtful. There were a few pages that were stuck together that took some effort to separate, some tight enough that I couldn't tell they were 2 pages sometimes but once they were separated that issue was gone. It won't be a problem when re-reading it, and it's not really a problem now, just something to note. It has 2 page marking ribbons are more helpful than I anticipated. The overall look wasn't high on my criteria but it is pretty good. It has a stately, quality look to it imo. I would recommend this bible to anybody looking for a personal bible. The quality is high enough that it is pleasant to read and even encourages me to read it more often. It's not a 100% perfect but I'm 100% satisfied with it.

Nice!
Great bible. Print is definitely smaller but I suppose since there is so much information to fit into one book, it has to be!

Lightweight Catholic Bible
This bible is lightweight and not too large. It is the same translation utilized at Mass. As someone who studied literature as an undergraduate, I value the fact that, at the end of each book, there are footnotes and cross-references. Each book has a critical introduction, outlining the distinctive structure and divisions. The pages are thin, but not flimsy. Also, the pages have a nice gold trim, which gives this bible a premium look. As I am nearsighted and in my 40s, I wish the text was a 14 point, at least. However, that's no problem; I can remove my glasses when reading, although I don't like to be fidgety during mass. I wish there were more maps, but the colored maps are at the very end.

Worth the price.
Pros: The print is large and readable. It's printed in South Korea which is infinitely better than being printing in China. Cons: I wish Catholic Bibles came in quality materials like leather, goat skin, etc. The cross references are at the end of each book which is annoying. The font size on the cross references is probably an 8pt font, which is very hard to read. There is no page in the front for gifting, marriage records, deaths, etc.

Fresh lens!
Balanced Bible translation. Readable 11pt font and book intros. Sewn binding. Historical, literary study notes that include Christian perspective. Minimal Roman Catholic influence in the notes. Great Bible for Catholics and Evangelicals seeking a historical, literary, fresh look at the text. Highly recommended!
