Tandy Leather The Art of Making Leather Cases, Vol. 1 61941-01
T**M
Full from front to back with diagrams and text - just amazing
This is 120 pages of details, diagrams, and tips on putting together cases. There are hand drawn line diagrams on every single page, maybe an average of 3-4 per page, plus some photos. This was written back in the 70's, so the styles and objects are different (cb radio case?) but the overall designs and techniques are universal. I don't know anything about the person that wrote this book, but he clearly was someone who spent years and years learning this trade, and spent a tremendous amount of time putting this together. It's a set of lessons and tricks from an old time expert.Yes, others have commented, it does assume some experience with the basics of putting leather together, and that's covered in another one of his books, but I won't ding my review for that, because this isn't titled "how to do pretty complicated leather work with zero experience". This isn't the for dummies book, it's a step or two past that. But it's readable for a complete novice.

Purchase and the Art of Hand Sewing first...this is effectively Volume 2!!! You will need the other book for referencing.
The book arrived with no problem. I do have an issue with regards to the content and description. What the description does not tell you is that this is not a stand-alone book. You cannot purchase this book and expect to have all the information in it to complete the projects. There is another book that the author wrote that describes how to complete various stitches and methods which you need to reference. I understand the concept: the author was righting a large number of books and this is how they kept from having to repeat themselves book after book after book. The issue that I have as someone who is just a beginner is that I purchased Volume 2 (because I was more interested in the projects it had) which I found referenced me to Volume 1 for descriptions on how to complete certain parts of the projects. Now that I have purchased Volume 1, it is referring me to another book: The Art of Hand Sewing. I wouldn't have an issue if the seller were up front and honest as to the order that the books should be purchased in due to the fact that they are effectively separate courses in a specific order. I believe that I still would have purchased all the books, but it leaves a sour aftertaste to not have all of this information readily available up front.

Only good instruction on this subject.
In order to use this book you must also have Al Stholman' book on Hand Stiching Leather.

Classic and entertainingly out of date
This series of books is an excellent introduction to leatherworking. I'd also recommend buying Vol. 1 before the others in the series, as the author builds upon each book and will refer you back to a section in a prior book as a shortcut in subsequent books. Of course this means that you have to have them all, but it also means that you're not paying for repetitive instructions on how to burnish/etc. Some of the projects (boxes/handbags/etc.) are still current; but others are less so -- or at least less so in my little corner of suburbia. I don't know the last time I needed a VHS Camera case, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't recently. At any rate, there's a lot of good information in here on techniques, but the projects are sometimes entertainingly anachronistic.

but the techniques are useful for anyone
There is so much in this book I will be busy for a while just working through the projects. It is a very old fashioned style, which will be a plus or minus depending on what you are looking for, but the techniques are useful for anyone, and the detailed instructions are great. A surprising range of ammunition cases/pouches which I'm sure I can adapt to something I would actually use. There isn't an inch wasted in this book.

Well worth the price...
I don't have a lot of this kind of book yet to compare it with, but I found this book immensely useful. This is basically a book of illustrations with notes and instructions. If you learn better with visuals, this will be immensely helpful. While some of the projects, as others have mentioned, are for items that aren't really current, the techniques and methods shown are easily applicable to other projects. A lot of things are explained as to the how and why to give you the tools to do projects outside of what is presented in this book. Great buy.

This is never to far from my work bench
I really like this hand book. The illustrations are clear and the instructions are easy to follow. These are vintage looking leather cases that I really like. Also be aware that this handbook was copyright in 1979 so he is making cases for old outdated things like cameras from the 70's, but the cool part is you can still make these cases for just about anything. Will be buying the other 2 handbooks.
