I bought this decades ago and I've always thought it was great. I even wrote Tanith Lee a fan letter - something I almost never do. It's dark and exotic, and the characters are convincingly treacherous, sensual and decadent. The language is rather heightened in a way that wouldn't really do for highbrow literature but is well matched to fantasy writing."They moved with a special,almost a specific arrogance, which pronounced them alien to this landscape far more than did their black hair and black-bronze burnish of skin."Curiously, there's little magic in it, though there are people described by others as witches, and events that seem to be magical. The intensely alien feel of the setting more than makes up for it.
