Bad paper, photo images with computer added elements, unoriginal
This didn't cost very much and my expectations were not too high. Needless to say it was as bad as I feared it would be! The image on the front was so interesting that it snagged my attention thus the purchase. I love portraits, particularly grey scale ones. That being said if I wanted to color a photograph, it is an easy matter to get stock images and convert or just print them in black and white. The "added elements" here are clearly done by computer. This is not art at all, well to the extent taking a picture requires skill it is, but the best photographers would have been embarrassed to claim these! To add insult to injury, the exact same person is photographed in some of the images, meaning you get the same woman with slight clothing/stance or a limited background being the only difference. The paper is bad. At this price I didn't expect high quality paper. As I prefer to keep my books and practice or do the final on high quality paper, I always copy the page and don't color the images in the book. If I mess up, it is easy to throw it out and start over. You can get really good paper on Amazon, 250 sheets for under 15.00. If you copy on the front and back which is doable unless you are using water colors, that means for 15. you have actually 500 pages. In this instance I didnt want to waste inexpensive paper of better quality and knew I wouldn't enjoy these anyway so colored the two I have completed directly into the book. The paper has no tooth, making blending of colors next to impossible. While greyscale provides some idea of shading/shadow, etc in these parts of the page are simply a block of black or white. It is like the printer bled on the page.I used Derwent Coloursoft because like Prismacolor, they are so creamy that they blend well even on poor quality paper. I used Gamisol after getting the blending as good as could be possible given the limitations of the paper, to blend further. If you do this, put a piece of cardboard behind the sheet to prevent pages underneath getting wet. It helped a little but when the paper has so little texture, there is nothing for the pigment to grab hold of, so it was a bit like swirling pigments on a piece of glass! There is some merit to the book. If you are just starting out working with portraits, you could make a copy of this on better paper and just work on the face, eyes and hair. Or it could be a practice page to see if the colors selected will work on a piece that is of higher quality.Had I not figured out before ordering that this was of poor quality it would have gotten a 1 star review. Since I suspected that overall the book would be middling at best, I thought it only fair to give a 3 star review. I have had far worse. But I have had many more that are far, far better. In this instance you get what you pay for!
