Overall boring
I saw this book on the Kindle store because it was on sale for .99 cents and had good reviews. I don't typically go for romance but am trying to branch out. The story is about Richard, a cold and emotionless seeming Lord, who finds himself infatuated with Evelyn, the doctor's daughter, who seems to also have feelings for him. However, Evelyn's main concern is proving that she is a capable doctor, and wanting people to take her seriously. Richard must overcome his inability to see her as a capable doctor if he is ever wanting to persue her.All in all I thought the book was overall boring. There wasn't really anything in it that was horrible, the writing was good, plot made sense, I guess, it was just the events that happened felt so forced and the characters were lacking for me. Richard's whole character is built around the fact that he can't seem to read people's emotions and thinks very logically. Honestly, he reminded me of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, the way he takes things so literally and doesn't understand a joke. Whereas Sheldon turns this quirk into a charming and funny quality, Richard's is just annoying, and Evelyn is left to teach him how to pick up on social clues, it honeslty felt like she was teaching a child to read. It was very dry to read about. Evelyn's main focus is proving she is a capable doctor. The author helps this along by many different instances that need a doctor's care. I found it so forced. At first I liked Evelyn and her strength to stand up for her work, but she was literally only caring about people in the household. I would have suspected a doctor would want to go out and help everyone in the town, not just the rich family she knows. What started out as a good beginning to a romance, Richard and Evdelyn obviously liking each other, was overpowered by awkward exchanges. There was a scene when the two were arguing and then Richard kisses her and she kisses him back. Afterwards, she goes right back to continuing her arguement like nothing happened. And then later she is surprised when Richard doesn't acknowledge it. Like, she was the one that ingored it in the first place-which was a weird reaction in the first place. Then they come to find out that both their fathers arranged for them to be married. A completely unnessary event if you ask me. It would have been nice to just see their relationship develop. Then there is an incident later on where someone tries to murder Richard. It was honestly completely out of the blue, it felt like it was added in, like a second thought. Again, it's used to prove Evdelyn's abilities and...strengthen their relationship? Not sure. It seemed to come out of nowhere. But I guess the story needed it, becuase it was insanely dry the back and forth between the two characters, neither of which had qualities or conversations that were interesting or even that sweet or romantic. I ended up disliking both characters as time went on. The sub-story of Richad's sister Claudia having a child with an unknown father was far more intersting. It almost would have been better if the entire story was about her, than Richard and Evelyn. I kept thinking they would go out and try and find the man who fathered the child, as Claudia seemed unable to remember him, but was oddly in love with him. But nothing became of it. Apparently the author is releasing a book about her story, after the child is born however.

A romance not without its challenges
This is in part about a young lady who finds herself unmarried and pregnant. And all the conundrums that follow. Another issue is addressed in these pages and that is the belief during this time period that women were only to look pretty and follow certain rules in society, not least of which is that she would not have the smarts to become a doctor. Evelyn was a doctor’s daughter and trained by him almost all her life. She more than once proved herself during the days before and after her and Richard’s betrothal and marriage during the Christmas holiday when family and friends were gathered in their home. Another issue addressed in this tale is the difficulty with which a life as a bastered is treated with great disdain. The merits of an individual and their worth is not even considered. All these issues are woven in between the romance which develops between Evelyn and Richard. A romance not without its challenges but we see these two work through their differences with honest communication. It was a pleasure to see how they accomplished this with its resultant success. Even in this day and age couples cannot accomplish this. One would do well to read this book and discover how it is done. I highly recommend this read.

Amazing Historical Romance
Holy Smokes!! What an awesome historical romance. Oppressed and Empowered is a book that you'll have trouble putting down once you start it. This well-written book will have you cheering in spots and tearing up in others. The characters are spectacular and a perfect fit for this book. Richard's sister has managed to get pregnant and doesn't remember it. Richard is struggling to do the right thing for her. He has trouble reading people's feelings so it's not an easy task. Evelyn has trained with her father her whole life to become a doctor. Because she's a woman it's hard to be accepted as a doctor though. Evelyn and Richard's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Bree Wolf. Oppressed and Empowered is book 5 of the Love's Second Chance: Damsels and Knights Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

3.5 STARS - ENDS IN CLIFFHANGER FOR H's SISTER
You do not need to read these in order to understand them. There is little on romance and we have only kisses.I did like most of the story line. Some suspense in the ending as to who the villain is. It didn't help that one of the suspects was called by two different names - very confusing. It did drag at times, no action until the end.Little on action until the ending. No cliffhanger for our H/h, but a big one for the H's sister. No cheating, HEA, epilogue a few months in the future. (ljb)

Love flourishes when opposites attract and empathy and the analytical collide!!!
Sensitively and cleverly written tale with an engaging plot, dipped in suspense, and a fascinating array of characters brimming with vulnerability.Everlyn is a fabulous character struggling with the prejudices of establishing recognition as a female doctor, despite her immense skill and compassion in the field. She's incredibly driven and a feisty champion to those she deems in need which inevitably leads her to clash with the hero. Steadfast in the comfort of following duty above feeling, Richard's brutally honest logic and found solace in the structure of rules, unfortunately gives the impression of him being coldhearted because of the shield of ice he grasps to hide his perceived social inadequacies. As a result, the intimate scenes between the pair swing between the deliciously compelling, highly touching and sweet to overwhelming tension fuelled by turbulent attraction and stomach churning misunderstandings that boil and simmer to the point of volcanic eruption. A combination that really kept me entertained and addictively glued until the end.Overall I found myself fighting back tears, my heart melting and enthralled/enlightened by the debilitating condition Richard suffers from. The emotions conveyed really revealed the frustration, confusion and torment of the condition and sensitively portrayed a refreshing insight into the daily struggles and painful consequences of misunderstandings and the fear of opening yourself up to the possibility of rejection and ridicule.A great read that really surprised me with how much the lead characters got under my skin and touched an emotional chord with me - compelling me to dig deeper and truly try to empathise with the couple's struggles to find understanding through honesty and exposure to vulnerability. One of my favourite books in the series so far; one that is as refreshingly turbulent as it is endearing!

An interesting romance with a touch of suspense.
A doctor in all but name Evelyn fights to be accepted whilst Richard’s inability to understand the emotions and motivations of those around him, leads to him being an aloof and lonely man. Can Richard give Evelyn the acceptance she needs and can he trust her enough to open himself up to love and happiness?

Social standing and the norms, touching on the social divide including women's capabilities
This romantic tale includes a look at social norms for the times as well women's capabilities to do more then men seem possible. It is all drawn together within a family and it's interactions. Well written and would read more from this author

Appreciating a skillful woman when women are not seen as having skills outside the home.
The book will be appreciated by anyone who understands how difficult it was for women to be seen as anything other than mother/wife in regency England. The writing is engaging, romantic and very satisfying for those of us who love thoughtful character development and happy endings.
