So far, the brushes are holding up well. The different brushes allows you to be creative and study/write different kinds of characters. All that you need to get started with calligraphy is included. I just had a teacher from Japan come for a seminar and I used the largest brush for this class. My calligraphy character I brushed came out "decent" and I can display it with teachers stamp on it.

Very good starter set if you want to learn a new art form. Easy fundamentals.

Overall, I recommend this set. I looked at pages of them on Amazon and other sites, but ultimately chose this one for the aesthetics and included items - all at a very competitive price (I see it has increased a bit since). I agree with other reviewers that directions would have been nice. It looks exactly as pictured - I really like the bamboo design on the ink stone - and includes a pamphlet of Chinese characters. All the brushes are different (short and long of light and dark). I intend to store a tin of red ink cushioned inside the ink stone and a dropper to the case. The seal I already have and flannel won't fit inside, but then it will be a complete set. Sorry I haven't used it yet so I can't speak to how well it actually works, but I am guessing it's average based on the workmanship. There are minor imperfections that give it away. For instance, the case feels like cardboard with fabric that's glued on and slightly rippled. The paper is bent from being folded to fit. Similarly, the magic cloth was wrinkled and had black marks. There were small chips in the ink stone and on some of the brushes. The "Gift For You" box arrived dented and ripped, but that's likely more a shipping issue. In short, it's the typical Chinese calligraphy gift set you see everywhere except for the price, I liked the design and combination of items included in this set best.

Customer service replied within 15 mins yall. There wasn’t any issue. They were just checking on me and the product. Worth the buy and it’s a beautiful set up. With a couple good books to use this kit with, you’ll be fine.

Nice box with all that's needed to do sumi-e paintings, including a lovely paintbrush holder. Feels expensive but it's a good value for money. Bought as a gift and it was well received.

bought for studying calligraphy and is a really nice set presented very nicely. and will aid in my university for calligraphy for Japanese writing for my studies for my ongoing projects for the 3 years of studying and very impressed with this set even though never used one before it seems to be of genuine quality for the price.

Ink is fine as is mixing bowl. Brushes could be better
