desertcart.com: Architecting the Cloud: Design Decisions for Cloud Computing Service Models (SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS) (Wiley CIO): 8601406277434: Kavis, Michael J.: Books Review: Pragmatic and objective approach to the cloud - It's hard finding objective, realistic advice on all things cloud but the author has done a very good job of doing just that. After the first few chapters it became very obvious the author had a lot of experience within corporate IT not just startups. That is a critical piece for those of us in the corporate IT environment where advice on the cloud usually comes from pundits, vendors and others far removed from the reality of the challenges enterprise IT shops face. There is no technology bias or vendor bias in the book and although the author has a lot of experience with AWS he does not try and sell it for all your solutions. The book takes you through a roadmap and foundational concepts about how to approach your applications and the cloud whether you are in enterprise IT or a nice greenfield startup. Some of the concepts are available in other places but you will be hard pressed to fine a more concise ordered guide. The author also provides lots of references to other information throughout the chapters. There are a lot of concepts covered including Rest based API's, Cloud Types, Devops, Security and Compliance (really good) as well as organization impacts. You will probably discover as I did about half way through the book that 99.9 of the stuff that is covered is a great foundation for a modern enterprise IT shop whether headed to the cloud or not. I ended up bookmarking about a million things which is always a good sign. I've done three enterprise IT cloud projects and I sorely wish I would have had this book before starting them. Although I'm going back to explore some of the chapters in more detail, the book was easy to get through in a weekend. I highly recommend reading it. Review: Great starter book for those that don't want to go hands to the keyboard - The book provided a strong introduction to the cloud world. That being said the focus of the book is really on the high level, you will not receive details on how desertcart has configured its cloud service outside of explanations of what IaaS / PaaS is. And you know what - that is ok - this is a good introduction to the topic of cloud computing. The AWS books (i.e. desertcart Web Services for Dummies) are too technical - this book has a good niche. I would recommend this for the project manage that wants to learn a little bit about cloud - or the architect that is coming over from a different field (i.e. security or networking) and likes to start at the very beginning. That being said - this isn't a "dummies book to cloud" - its further along than that. You sill need to understand architecture and other advanced computing topics to get the full value of the book

A great mix of theory and practice
I bought this book because it has chapters on cloud security -- issue #1 for many of us. And it really delivered. The author clearly has deep experience in this area, and it shows. But it's also a very good general book about the cloud. Kavis is able to step back and talk about issues in ways that are really helpful on a number of levels. Very helpful. I've consulted it a number of times since the purchase.

You can Buy Experience on Cloud!
I have enjoyed this book very very much. The main reason is author has significant background on IT, SW Development, SW Delivery & Deployment and also as importantly on business of delivering the IT Solutions to market by utilizing the Cloud. Attention: Please Be Aware That This is NOT a Bible/Tutorial/Course Book. It is rather a "Experience Talks!" style written, well organized full of recommendations on "Business Living With & In the Cloud". If you like see a diary of a Cloud SW Delivery Manager with insights of development side, business side, organizational management side this book is a "Must" to read.

Entertainment for IT Architects
I found this book accidentally while I check what articles available on the Internet about the Cloud and IT Architectures. First few chapters available free on the various Internet pages (ex.: Amazon), and as it was so good, so readable and entertaining I finally ordered a hard copy too. It provides a very good, and comprehensive description of designing Could infrastructure for hosting customer services and/or for designing Services into various Could models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS). With reading this about 200 pages very good, vendor independent knowledge can be acquired.

I thought the book was a well organized overview book. I think it's a must read for any executive, manager or systems person because the book does a great job of detailing the impact that cloud computing is having and key design considerations required.

Good high level over of Cloud Computing
I really enjoyed the leading chapters and providing a concrete example really helped. The book got a little bit dry in the security section, but came back at the end. I found myself doing research on some of the tools mentioned in the book while reading it, that really helped me make my jump from enterprise to the cloud. Overall well worth the read.

Great overview of what to look for and what to ...
Great overview of what to look for and what to avoid in moving to a cloud architecture. While getting a bit dated in some of the information, the design principles are sound and so are the use cases. It does not get too deep into the technical areas, which allows it to be useful for management and C levels as well as technically focused people just getting started into cloud computing. Also short enough for people who are terminally busy to finish.
