A rare event
It does not happen very often that the lines of history are redrawn. Belting has done just this, not only about the past, but by very strong implication, about what is happening today. Is our current a-intentionalism a gateway into a new era of idolatry?

Revolutionized Art History
One of the first art historians to take a look at art in its context and according to its function. It's a great read for those interested in art, culture and religion.

Essential text for the study of icons and images
Belting's text is an essential one for anyone interested in the study of icons. A useful addition would be a visual diagram of the connections between chapters, however (Belting provides notes in the text, but these can seem like a maze).
