Product Description Certified at 2 million units by the RIAA. (2/01) .com The legendary trio's eponymous 1962 debut produced two classics--"Lemon Tree" and Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer." Because they were always hipper and more political than the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary were soon frequently credited as the group that transformed American folk music into '60s pop. It would be another six months before they really exploded with "Puff the Magic Dragon," and then another six before they brought Bob Dylan into the mainstream via their hit covers of "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Don't Think Twice." Which is why 1970's 10 Years Together: The Best of Peter, Paul and Mary remains the essential buy; nevertheless, the debut features their gorgeous covers of "Cruel War" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," making this disc mandatory for folk fans. --Bill Holdship

I love this album and always have
I had this album when it originally came out but lost that vinyl copy somewhere over the years as I moved around the country. A couple of weeks ago I ordered this CD and it is such a pleasure to hear it again. I have other PPM CDs but they have a fuller sound due to backup instruments . This one is PPM during their early years when it was mostly guitar and voices. This is how they sounded on TV. I have so many favorite songs on this CD but I think the ones I replay the most are "Cruel War" (which makes me cry) and "Autumn to May" (which makes me laugh). Of course, right behind that is "500 Miles" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" (both of which make me cry). In my opinion, everything PPM touched turned to spun gold. The hard protest songs, children's songs, and light fun songs. They are all keepers.

Wonderful
Having grown up during the tempestuous times of Vietnam, and being a 'Nam vet, I listened to Peter, Paul, & Mary a lot, along with many other groups. They add another element of depth to all the songs on my phone. I listen to this in the car, while working in my shop, and when doing yard work.

I was delighted to discover the CD
So many memories here! As a child, I learned all of Mary's parts (and wore out the LP). I was delighted to discover the CD. I still sing along.I love the energy in Early in the Morning. 500 Miles and Sorrow tell such sorrowful stories. This Train, Cruel War, If I Had My Way, If I Had a Hammer, and Where Have All the Flowers Gone are all among my favorite songs of all time. In all honesty, there's not a bad track on this recording. If you want to hear Peter, Paul & Mary in one of their best releases, then you can start here.

Get the album
It's so simple these days to just download a song here or there from a group or just get their "best of" collection. But recently I realized how easy it is to miss out on a singer or group's other songs that may be wonderful but didn't become hits. I've listened to their music for years and it was a joy to discover "new music" from them. (This is their first album) What an incredible impression it must have made on the hippies, beatniks, folkies, and many other music lovers to hear such a folk album. I am so grateful that these three singers found each other.

Timeless!
Words aren't enough to describe how good this album is. I'm 21, die-hard Dylan fan since I was 15, and I was recently introduced to their music. I was only acquainted with their version of Blowing in the Wind, and I recommend strongly to all the casual listeners to get deeper into PP&M songs, and this album is really a fine place to start. It has no filler tracks. Each song is a gem.Early in the Morning - has an upbeat tempo and religious lyrics, and very nice harmonies. Only problem is that it's too short.500 Miles - Very Classic song. One of the highest points of the album.Sorrow - The slower and original version of the well-known "Man of Constant Sorrow". Nice! This Train - Another upbeat song. Really Nice!Bamboo - A soft and catchy song. It's Raining - I read some critics of this song, but I think it sounds good, despite the fact of doesn't being one of the best songs on the album. If I Had My Way - Very nice song and harmonies.Cruel War - One of the most memorable songs I have ever listened in my life. Nothing more to say about this song...Lemon Tree - A folk classic! A comparison between love and a lemon tree. "Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet, but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat."If I Had a Hammer - A Pete Seeger's Classic! One of my favorites. Great lyrics, still ahead of our times.Autumn to May - Very Beautiful and nice song. Another highpoint.Where Have All The Flowers Gone - Another Pete Seeger's Classic. Outstanding lyrics, a nice melody, and a political emphasis.I think that every folk fan will not simply like this album, but love it. It's impossible to dislike it. I own more than 250 albums and this one is really one of my favorites. It makes you want to be a better person, it makes you feel calm, and this album is surely one of the most valuable treasures of the humankind. Regards from a young brazilian fan!

Nostalgia
The disc reminds me of "Once upon a time in Hollywood" 1962 before the period of the movie titled the same. Hollywood was a safe, clean, cool, and happy place then.

I was very happy to receive it to add to my collection
I first heard this album on a turntable years ago. Since moving over to cds I always wanted this album in that version. This was the album that showed what this group would one day become. The album although used was everything I wanted. I was very happy to receive it to add to my collection.

Their Best Album
This was Peter Paul and Mary's first and in my opinion, best album. Some cuts I like better than others, Sorrow, and 500 Miles for instance, but I like them all. I SO prefer this to the Kingston Trio of the same vintage! Some of these songs sound contemporary which cannot be said for many folkies from the period.
