If you have a wood burning stove, these sticks are a big help. However it's important to realize that these won't replace your kindling, but it may reduce the amount of small kindling that you need. As you know, with a wood stove the goal isn't just to catch the logs on fire, it's to get the fire as hot as possible as fast as possible and create a great bed of coals. Many of us who depend on wood stoves for heat start our fires with a resinous softwood like pine, and then as soon as the stove is hot enough, switch to slower and cleaner burning hardwood oak, almond, or walnut. With these sticks, you don't want to go straight to the hardwood. They'll catch, but it won't be hot enough to get them really going and either you'll lose the fire altogether, or the fire will just be a slow burn and never heat up your house. So you still need kindling. I've tried a few methods with these sticks and here is what I use best. Basically, I replace most of my small kindling with two of these. I rest these against a small round log for a foundation (I don't have a grate). Then I stack some bigger kindling around them, like maybe 2-3" wide x 8-12" long. I do add a few small bits of pine to help build heat, and then still wad up a little newspaper under the bigger pieces of kindling. Then I light it all up! These little fire sticks make it a lot less likely I'll content with a fire that won't "stick" and also let me jump to the bigger kindling sooner. And the faster that all goes up, the faster I can start adding in some real logs. My guess is these sticks cut down my fire-making time in half. So they're worth it with a wood stove too, but maybe not as valuable as they would be for a fireplace fire.

I was skeptical given the price. I normally buy the more expensive name brands. We have a wood burning fireplace insert and normally burn 3 face cords of wood during the winter. I don’t have a gas starter and have been relying on fatwood for the last 10 years. I’ve used many brands and this is the best. It is super easy to light and burns well for a long time. The pieces are larger than other brands, I’d say 2x as large so you actually have less individual pieces because it is sold by weight. That said, I really like the larger pieces since they are super easy to light. I use a scripto wind proof lighter and it works perfectly every time. In fact, this brand is easier to light than any fatwood I’ve used. It burns longer and never fails to light my fires with a single piece of fatwood. I use the top down fire starting method and normally start the fire with 7 to 8 logs. I use a mix of hardwood and less dense woods for starting.

We have a wood stove that we use for heat in the winter months. We have a fire going just about every night and go though a ton of wood. When you start as many fires as we do you learn getting wood is the easy part, finding kindling is tough because you tend to blow through. Chopping up those larger pieces into smaller pieces gets tedious. That's why I love this product. All I have to do is use a little paper or cardboard, a few pieces of these starter sticks, then lean some large logs on top, light, and boom you have a roaring fire. When you have as many fires as we do using these starter sticks get expensive so if we can, we avoid using these. But when you just want a fire and don't feel like scavenging for smaller twigs and massive amounts of cardboard / paper these are the perfect solution and consistently work.

These fatwood sticks work very well for starting a fire. 4 or 5 sticks, maybe a little paper to light them all evenly and you're good to go. My only hesitation is that the 10 pound bag is $20, so $2/pound. If you build a lot of fires throughout the season, get a 40 or 50 pound box of the Plow & Hearth fatwood.

These things are awesome. I use two of them to start fires in the fireplace or outside in a fire pit. They light quickly with only a match and burn hot enough to get logs going nicely. I find they are not as effective after a year or two so my suggestion would be to order one season's worth at a time. I ordered a huge bag once and regretted it after a couple of years.

We have a cold house and still have a nice fireplace insert so we can burn a fire and stay warm in at least one room. These fire starters are great. I place a few on top of some newspaper and under the small kindling. They really help to get the fire started quicker, so we don't have a bunch of smoke. If the fire seems to die before I get a chance to add another log, I can add a couple more and they help to get the fire going again. I like this brand over the others I bought, as you get a little more for a little less money. Great product.

This starter wood is amazing. Only 1 stick is required per fire. It lights immediately and quickly catches your stacked wood on fire without the use of flammable liquids, newspaper, grass, etc. While it is a bit pricey, the packaging, quality of wood and wonderful smell of sap make it worth it. I used to collect this stuff in the mountains and took it for granted.
