Robert Frank: Pangnirtung Hardcover – February 1, 2011

Although this book contains only 26 photographs, each one embodies Frank's distinctive and compelling vision, his sense of the latent power of objects and spatial relationships few others perceive. I don't know if this book conveys any real sense of Baffin Island, a place I would love to visit, but it certainly projects a powerful fusion of otherness and ordinariness that is both enlightening and oddly comforting. Frank is an inimitable photographer, and his grasp of the contingent force of the found world, descended from Evans, Cartier-Bresson, and other visionaries, is convincing and essential.

Remarkable late Frank. Extraordinarily expressive and melancholy. Not a person anywhere in sight. Many appear to be Polaroids. Lots of shots of windows reflecting arctic light. Maybe thirty in all.

Everything you can expect from a master in photography and a master in publishing. I love this book.

Ein ungewoehnliches, ein schoenes Buch! Ich wuerde jeden verstehen, der dieses Buch durchblaettert und mit fragendem Blick wieder zur Seite legt. Dieser Bildband ist sicherlich etwas eigen und nicht jeden werden diese Bilder gleich ansprechen. Mir persoenlich gefaellt dieser Bildband sehr gut, die schwarz-weiss Fotografien vermitteln sehr verdichtet die Atmosphaere eines ungewoehnlichen Ortes. Man gewinnt ein Gefuehl dafuer wie es sich anfuehlen muss dort zu sein. Die Verarbeitungsqualitaet dieses duennen Bildbandes sei lobend hervorgehoben, ein schoener Leineneinband, klare, schoene schwarz-weiss Fotografien, insgesamt recht edel. Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob und wie oft man dieses Buch wieder zur Hand nimmt, zugegeben, trotzdem bereue ich den Kauf nicht. Eben ein schoenes, ein ungewoehnliches Buch.

Non ci sono le persone, in quest'ultimo viaggio del grande fotografo elvetico. Da Perù a Valencia, da Parigi a Londra, dal Galles agli Stati Uniti, al Libano per finire sul Circolo Polare artico, questo libro sembra rappresentare la fine dei grandi viaggio di questo genio della fotografia. Peccato per la mancanza di una nota introduttiva.
