Would this hold up in harsher enviornments? Looking for something in a machine shop

I don't see why not. There's not much to go wrong and cleaning is simple. Of course, in a machine shop, cleaning might have to be done a bit more often.

I have a macbook air and can't seem to get the swiper to work. did i purchase the wrong one? can i exchange it?

You have to ask the manufacturer; on any PC, when you swipe the magnetic card, it acts as though you have typed the alphanumeric digits yourself on a keyboard. You may query Apple if you need a specific USB driver for it.
