Review: Quite possibly the perfect work knife - I use this knife as an everyday carry. Hands down best knife for the cost. I use it for everything from opening packages to cutting wire and it holds an edge. Have beat on it pried and dropped it plenty of times. Cut shingles and whatever else gets in the way. Love that it has a full fine edge as serrated blades are worthless after a few cuts and a little abuse. That is what first drew me to this knife as finding a full edge knife is almost impossible now. The full tang and minimal but well feeling grip is the perfect compliment to the blade. Buy it and a nice stone and you will be happy with this for life. Thank you gerber for making a knife and not a saw.
Review: Gutted a cow elk no problem - This is my hands down all time favorite fixed blade hunting knife. My second favorite is the Benchmade hidden canyon hunter. Considering the price difference, Gerber beats it by a mile. It held an edge from cutting through fur and skin on the chest. Stayed sharp enough to cut the diaphragm out cleanly and skinned the whole animal. I did not batton it through the chest or hip bones, however. We used a small hatchet for that. Over all a fantastic value for the real world hunter. Its quality enough to last and function well, cheap enough that you don't cry if you lose it. Also not heavy at all.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What kind of steel is it?**
A: As noted, 5Cr15MoV. It's a Chinese stainless steel roughly on par with 440A or AUS-6--one of the more highly stain-resistant, but generally overly-soft and cheapest steels on the market. A good heat treat can make it decent, but it's chemical composition will not allow it to ever be a spectacular performer. It's also the Chinese equivalent of a German steel popular in German cutlery, but like I said, there's only so much a maker can do with it, even with good heat treat protocols...A factor I doubt Gerber can or cares to control much with their overseas blade production. Churn them out fast, sell them cheap. It makes me sad that Gerber abandoned the S30V steel, USA-made stag-handled version, which was, in my opinion, one of the best hunting knives made. I assume that Freeman is unhappy to have his name associated with something Gerber apparently no longer cares much about. Although the design, hasn't changed, the steel on this will need to be sharpened probably 3-5 times more frequently. S30V is a steel designed by Crucible Metallurgy from the ground up specifically for cutlery. Crucible makes use of a powdered metallurgy technique that produces much smaller, more highly refined, more evenly distributed carbides throughout in the steel's crystalline structure. That technique paired with a good steel recipe, and the cryogenic heat treatment protocols makes it one of the new breed of so-called "super steels" that are popular with knife enthusiasts, including CPM154 (a powdered metallurgy version of the popular 154 CM steel), 3V, CPM-D2 (a new take on a classic tool steel), and S35VN from Crucible, Elmax from Bohler-Uddeholm, and HAP40 from Hitachi.

**Q: is this knife made in china?**
A: Yes, this knife is made in China

**Q: Can i use this as an edc knife ?**
A: A typical Gerber multitool sheath is 5-6 inches closed and 2.6 to 3 inches wide. This knife is 4.5 inches closed. This knife weighs 6.6 oz. My multitool weighs 7.7 oz. I don't even feel my multitool on my belt anymore. Depending on where you are, be prepared for an idiot or two to make a big deal about a larger folder where they can see it. They'll even ask what's in the sheath once in a while. Another suggestion is to have a knife in various places, desk draws, backpacks, tool belts, vehicles. You don't have to keep a knife on you to have access to one when you want it. And you can keep some larger fixed blades off-body.

**Q: Is this knife made in USA? Thanks**
A: Nope. Still a decent blade for the money.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best little knife
*by J***S on September 1, 2024*

The GERBER Freeman fixed blade knife is one of the best little knives out there. I do wish it was half serrated, but it’s ok like it is. Blade is just under 4 inches, just right. Came sharp. Handle is rubber and fits the hand good. Wide enough to do working jobs and pointed enough to poke holes. The sheath is useless. Be prepared to find another sheath for this great little knife.
