Q: Which way does the plug fit back in?

The white plug don't use it if the pole fits in the hole. There are two white pieces come with the stand, that's because you can use two size poles. Did this help and there is no plug, on the bottom where the sand goes just put the plug back the same way you took it off.

Q: How heavy is the base? I'm planning to put a 1 1/4" pole in it and I don't want it to be unstable

Put sand in the base and it will support your flag pole just fine. Very easy to do.

Q: Is it 1 piece or 2 in the order

It is one piece/base, they are showing 2 bases. The base comes in one piece with a plug. the plug fits too loosely in the hole in the base to be useful, we put tape across it to keep it from falling out. The only way we thought we could add weight to it would be to fill it with plaster of paris. You can't add water because the plug is too loose (and doesen't have a screw fitting). However it serves the purpose without any added weight and that is the way we are using it at our VFW post. It is nice looking and we are pleased with it. Hope that's helpful, Bob
